Beltran off the board
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
UPDATE:
The New York Post is now reporting that the Mets will be getting stud pitching prospect Zack Wheeler in the deal. Wheeler was ranked as the No. 35 prospect in the game by Baseball America in that publication's midseason rankings.
Phillies top pitching prospect Jarred Cosart, who likely would have had to have been part of any Beltran deal, was ranked 43.

Any hope of Carlos Beltran batting behind Ryan Howard for the rest of the season has apparently vanished. Multiple national reports say the Mets and Giants are close to a deal that would send the switch-hitting slugger to San Francisco in exchage for minor league outfielder Gary Brown, who entered the season as the organization's third-ranked prospect according to Baseball America.
Brown is hitting .317 with an .853 OPS, eight home runs and 39 stolen bases for High-A San Jose this season. He is 22 years old.
The Phillies are hesitant to part with top prospects for rental players. Beltran will be a free agent at the end of the season. The Phillies' top two prospects are righthander Jarred Cosart and first baseman Jonathon Singleton, both of whom are at High-A Clearwater.
The Phillies have apparently focused most of their recent efforts on Astros outfielder Hunter Pence, although a deal still appears to be a long shot. ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported that the two sides were close to a deal earlier this week that likely revolved around Cosart and Singleton, but that the Astros backed away.
The Phillies do not seem likely to move outfielder Domonic Brown, although they would likely end up having to demote him to Triple-A in the result of a player such as Pence.
Last night, Fox's Ken Rosenthal reported that the White Sox were looking to cut salary and floated outfielder Carlos Quentin as a potential trade target, but such a deal seems far fetched for the Phillies, given the level of talent it would take to convence Chicago to part with an MVP-candidate outfielder making $5 million who is under control through next season.

The deal with Beltran is not final yet Murphy.
I am glad he went to the giants and not the braves if that is the case. The giants need more than beltran to beat the phillies. Bob65S
Cosart and Singleton won't be enough for Pence outta work
Wade has to save some kind of face for all the dealing he does with the Phils, although the deals have worked out pretty fair to both sides so far.....I wouldn't give up much more than Cosart or Singleton though. Highway robbery is a felony in most states. Maybe a couple lower level prospects included but no more than those two big guys. Mark1npt
I'm fine with not getting Beltran micconway

Throw worley in with the Cosart/Singleton deal and Pence is a Phillie. The Astros are two years away from contending, with Pence/without him as it is. plus you keep Brown as well as Raul-insurance/replacement and all is good. ESFjellin
Comment removed.- Don't really care if the Giants get Beltran. As for Hunter Pence, he'd be the ideal longterm solution to the RH bat problem the Phils have. Be ready to move a lot to get him though. Best solution may be to make a smaller move, like bringing in a Willingham type and some back end help for the bullpen. paulNC
The Giants don't hit much for average but they're very fundamentally sound team with some clutch hitting ability. Beltran will make them much more dangerous. When they get the lead in the late innings they are as good as any team. We have to counter with somebody better than Reed Johnson or Marlon Byrd. Both Atlanta and the Giants have good LH relievers, which will give us trouble. We need that big RH hitter to complement Utley, Howard and Ibañez. And Atlanta won't stand pat either. They have been linked to both Pence and Carlos Quentin and have the prospects to get either one, more so now that McCann is going to the 15 DL with a strained left oblique today, according to a report.

That's bad news for the Phillies who couldn't beat the Giants last year when they had no bats. If this deal goes through they get one of the best all-around players in the league. We have to rough them up now and hope to keep them out of the playoffs. I don't think there are any other players out there who make a difference and are worth the price, so try to get Giambi as a cheap DH and pack it in. jtj06
Who cares. Here's something to chew on.. In the 56 games the Phillies have played since Chase returned to the lineup, they've averaged 4.75 runs per game. For the season, the Cardinals have been the NL's top run scoring team with an average of 4.73. Hmmm, maybe Rube realizes the need to unload half the farm for a right-handed bat isn't as great as everyone is making it out to be... stikolaboloni
Glad he isn't trying to throw Brown in the deal, might throw in another prospect to get him, we would have a good outfield next year...I wonder if Wade is hoping for better prospect from Atlanta with McCann being injured? I'm also glad Beltran didn't go to Atlanta...I expect Atlanta to jump in on Pence.... PhilliefaninAZ
No! They will play well and win it all or underperform. They have enough talent to win as they are. pmac
Pretty sure Seegs is drunk. Sure, the dodgers will trade away their franchise player after signing him to a deal just last year. An MVP candidate making just $7M this year. yea, they can't waaaaaait to get that guy off their books. Platinum

We need to bring Hunter Pence here. Trade Kyle Kendrick and Ben Francisco and perhaps a couple of farm prospects, or even possibly part with Domonic Brown. We need to keep Worley - he's far better than Kendrick. Larry Eastwood- Hey - I've got an old sofa and 8 track player....trade me your car for it, ok?

It's reported Wade is in serious talks with the Braves for Pence. If that happens and Giants get Beltran, RAJ is left holding the bag with what he has. The Braves will win the NL East and the Phils will be lucky to win the Wild Card. sonnybuoy01- Seriously? Man, you gotta lay off the mushrooms.

Atlanta is going to get Hunter Pence and we are going after Carlos Quentin. Book it. EL Zorro
Amaro doesn't know how to fill holes --he only knows how to make a splash when trading for sure-fire aces -- Gillick knew how to solve issues like getting bench and bullpen pieces and balancing lineup --indeed everyone was clamoring for Amaro to get right handed bat all winter -- could jave signed guys like Francouer or Melky Cabrera then without having to give up prospects --just like he could have kept Lee before 2010 and then wouldn't have had to give up prospects for Owsald (prospects that could have been used to fill other needed holes instead)...fans that have faith in Amaro will continue to be disappointed in the empty suit warbiscuit
anything can happen in the playoffs but this certainly makes SF the favorite to repeat. TooManyAdsOnThisSite
Glad to see the Giants overpay for Beltran instead of us or even the Braves. Keeping him away from Altanta is great. JimG
Zack Wheeler in Single A+ ball this season has an ERA of 3.99. It will be years before he ever hits the Bigs. If ever. F. Harry Stowe

If Wade wants, Cosart, Singleton, another minor league arm AND Worley...give the Dodgers a call. That is a king's ransom and just could be enough to pry Kemp out of that toilet bowl of a franchise. He is stud and actually worth that much if they can get him. If they turn you down then give in to Wade, Pence. Bleedsgreen
matt kemp would be insane! jfd6812
We are already ahead of the game by not renting Beltran. Melky Cabrera for a few mid-level prospects would be a winner for RAJ! Phillyfan among the NYers- All this trade stuff is Stressing Ruben. I'm sure Ruben will make the right move.
Highly advanced sabermetrics tell us that stats like win-loss records and earned run average are often misleading. Using highly advanced sabermetrics, we can easily tell if a rookie pitcher is destined for greatness, such as Greg Maddux, or is merely just a "flash in the pan". Greg Maddux was 6-14 with a 5.61 ERA in his rookie season, but using highly advanced sabermetrics, it would have been easy to see he was destined for the Hall of Fame. Freedom Fries
I brought the Kemp scenario a while ago, but I proposed Victorino and a few prospects. I think the The Dodgers won't settle for prospects only. The reason I brought Kemp was because both him and Eithier soon are going to become FA. And I think they rather keep Either because they see Kemp more of a character issue. And although Kemp is having a great season, over the last few years Either has been more consistent. Kemp had a down year last season. EL Zorro
I looked at the Giants roster today, it is a mess...they had a bigger need to fill...the Phillies are stacked with talent compared to both the Giants and Braves...maybe the Phillies need to pull a deal like 1983 when the Pope came in to get the Vet group going...bring up Ryan Sandberg to give them a swift kick in the tail to perform up to their potential!!! danielboyer
Good, I didn't want Beltran even a little bit. cloudkitt
