The Phils promoted red-hot third base prospect Cody Asche this afternoon amid reports that veteran third baseman Michael Young will be moved before Wednesday's 4 p.m. trade deadline. Some went as far as to report Young would be gone by game time to make room for Asche.
Not so fast.
Young is in the starting lineup on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants. Asche is not.
Of course, that could change before game time. But FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported today that Young would only waive a full no-trade clause if it meant getting dealt back to Texas.
Since the Rangers' interest might be lukewarm at best, it's highly possible Young stays... unless he reconsiders his stance and decides he wants to play for a contender and a chance at a first World Series ring in the next 2-3 months.
But if Young stays, he and Asche could both play. How?
Ryan Howard had knee surgery last month. Darin Ruf was called up to play first base.
In order to add more offense to a lineup desperately in need of regular production, Ruf, who is in left field on Tuesday night, can stay in left when Domonic Brown returns from a 7-week DL stay (concussion).
Michael Young then moves to first; Asche plays third base.
As for Brown? He can move back to right field, a position he's familiar with. While the Phils would rather not move Brown again, the only future Ruf has in this organization would come in left field.
So why not see if he can play there on a regular basis?
The last two months of Phillies baseball are going to be meaningless from the position of looking at the standings. But they will be important in determining the viability of young players like Ruf and Asche moving into 2014.
Asche, by the way, was hitting .409 (16-for-42) with five home runs in his last 10 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phils DFA'd Steven Susdorf to make room for Ashce on the roster.
