Well, this should just about settle any talk about Adam Eaton's role, or lack thereof.

Asked today whether Adam Eaton had any chance at establishing himself as the Phillies' No. 5 starter, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said, well, no.

"Based on what we've seen, it is a four man competition," Amaro said, "and he is not involved in that competition."

The four men who are involved: Righthanders Kyle Kendrick, Carlos Carrasco and Chan Ho Park, and lefthander J.A. Happ.

Amaro didn't say what, exactly, will happen with Eaton. The veteran is entering the last year of a three-year contract and is guaranteed $8.5 million. But the Phillies have made it clear that he is not part of their plans. Amaro didn't completely rule Eaton out of the team's plan, but left a definite impression that he is moving on.

"We just think the other four guys give us a better chance to win," Amaro said.

Add Ty Wigginton to the list of names the Phillies have investigated as potential additions to the team. Wigginton, who can play either corner outfield or corner infield position, plus second base, hit .285 with 23 home runs last season in just 386 at-bats for the Astros.

The Phillies have spoken with a number of free agents with experience at third base, including the Giants' Rich Aurilia, and are expecting Jason Donald to work out at third and second during spring training.

It appears the Phillies are determined to protect themselves in case third baseman Pedro Feliz's back injury - he had surgery in November - continues to be a problem.

"We're trying to give ourselves a little depth to make sure we are covered in case we have relapses with Pedro or Chase," Amaro said.

That said, the Phillies sound very pleased with Utley's progress from hip surgery. Utley said yesterday he hopes to start running on hard ground and swinging the bat within the next two-to-three weeks. He said he is more optimistic now than he was two months ago about being ready for Opening Day. That said, the Phillies insist they wil treat him with extreme caution.

Amaro did not rule out Carlos Carrasco as an option for the bullpen should he lose out on the No. 5 spot in the rotation. But he did say that, ideally, Carrasco will head back to the minor leagues and continue to refine his skills as a starter rather than crack into the big leagues as a reliever.

^

One other worthy note: Catcher Lou Marson looks to still be a year away from contending for a big league roster spot. Amaro said he expects Marson to head back to the minors after spring training. He did not rule out keeping three catchers. But the third catcher would likely be new acquisition Ron Paulino.

Looks like this will be the second year in a row that no rookie will be on the opening day 25 man roster unless Carrasco is perfect in spring training. At least the arbitration clock will not start on any prospect.

it's so nice to have a GM that tells you what he thinks, how he feels about players, and talks like a human being about his decisions with explanations. Andy Reid should save this little blog post and read it next time he wonders why we all hate him.

suggests sending Eaton to the worst league we have in the minors. Not the worst team, the leagure with teh worst conditions, worse travel schedule, worse facilities, etc and making him sit every day on the bench without pitching. Serves him right. Make him eat his 8 million dollars which could be used elsewhere to, if nothing else, feed an entire neighbourhood this year

Carlos Carrasco had an excellent winter in the Venezuelan League to follow an great summer. Now a Venezuelan team candidate, let's hope the kid doesn't pitch himself out. Wigginton's a professional hitter, a versatile defender, with more power than either Dobbs or Feliz. Reports are he wants a two years contract for at least $4mil/yr. If the Phils are interested they might want to jump into the negotiations, because Wigginton's agent and O's are having discussions about length of contract. Apparently, the O's designated one of their players for assignment (Oscar Salazar)to make room for Wigginton or a player like him. Salazar's an interesting case. He was second in hitting this year in the Venezuela Winter League, plays all four infield positions, bats righthanded, has some pop, rarely strikes out, and has been buried in the minors until last season. Kind of like a younger (30 yr old) Chris Coste. Just a good player waiting for a chance. Oriole fans are alarmed that he was dangled on the waiver wire.

Good post jp. Speaking of Chris Coste, does this frantic search for a right handed bat and the signing of Paulino signal the end for him?

Kudos to Amaro for "telling it like it is." Something we aren't used to in Philly anymore with Reid's nonsense, cough and wheeze. I doubt the Phils could repeat the pitching performance of last year and they definitely needed to address that. Seems as if they are. Eagles could take quite a few lessons from the Phils in every aspect...then maybe they too can get a parade. GO PHILLIES!

I can see them carrying three catchers. Ibenez will play the full nine in the outfield so no defensive replacement or pinch runner will be needed as it was last year with Burrell. Werth is now an every day player in right. Considering Coste is a career .319 hitter against lefties and a .267 career pinch hitter he can fill the right handed pinch hitter role. On the other hand Ruiz is only a .206 career hitter against lefties while Paulino is a .355 career hitter against lefties but is only a .143 career pinch hitter. Paulino would get some action against left handed pitching. The bench would be Dobbs and Jenkins/Stairs from the left side, Coste and Paulino from the right side and Bruntlett the utility guy. This is of course assumes Utley and Feliz are ready to go.

Ty Wigginton would be a great choice. But he probably wants to start (who doesn't) or play a lot specially after putting good numbers in a reverse role last year, which in the Phillies scenario, won't happen unless Feliz is not ready or keeps getting hurt. One option could be to promise him the 3B job next year when Felix becomes a FA. BTW, I am puzzled by Marson. I read a Keith Law piece, from ScoutsInc. and ESPN.com, about the 100 best prospects for 2009 and Marson was not included. He was not in the top 10 catchers, and not even in the Phillies to 5 prospects. Phillies catching prospect D'Arnaud is regarded as a better prospect. Donald, in the other hand, is one of the top 10 best middle infield prospect, according to Law. Go figure.

Why not put Eaton at a position and let him pinch hit? Surely he can't play third any worse than he pitches.

Jeff - you can't just put a player with an MLB contract in the minors - they have to agree to that assignment (see Brett Myers last year). They have 3 options - have him on the 25 man roster, trade him, release him. Either way, they are paying him.

What about Coste as a right handed hitting versatile bench option if he doesn't keep his backup catcher position. He can play both corner infield positions and LF (maybe RF in an emergency) and, of course, be a third string catcher. He's done well as a PH where his determination and patience in getting to the big leagues seems to pay off. Could be a better short term option until the status of Feliz and Utley are better known in spring training (seems the Phils are more concerned about Feliz's recovery right now). Besides, there may be lots of unsigned backup utility players looking for work by the end of spring training or even later. Same goes for additional relief pitching. Phils big weakness will be the first 2 months between suspension and off-season surgeries.

Wigginton always puts up great numbers from the bench, but didn't he quit on a team a couple of years ago, maybe San Francisco or Toronto? I remember him gettting dumped by some mediocre team in the middle of a statistically very good season thanks to his (bad) attitude.

Wiggy has played for the Mets, Pirates, Rays and 'Stros. Terrific in stretches but can't quite sustain it enough to be a starter. Probably wants to start but he is best off the bench as a part timer. Got to see him a lot on TV because I [unfortunately] live in Met territory and remember him being a solid fill in. Been sayin' all along he's ideal for the Phils.

Gary Varsho...as far as I know, Eaton didn't agree to his minor league assignment last year but was still sent down to ...yes, thats right...Single A...and still got rocked down there...so unless I'm mistaken and he agreed to the demotion to Single A ball last year, they can send him to the minors if they so choose.
