Afternoon update: Reyes, Francoeur

POSTED: Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 1:57 PM

The Phillies could be closing in on a deal for a lefty reliever. A baseball source with knowledge of the situation said talks have accelerated between the Phillies and former Cardinals southpaw Dennys Reyes. ESPN's Enrique Rojas reported the two sides were "very close" to a one-year deal with a club option.  A second source said the Phillies are Reyes' ideal destination. The two parties met last night, but as of this morning a deal was not imminent. Also on the Phillies' radar is Dodgers lefty George Sherrill.

Jeff Francoeur has agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Royals, so cross him off your list of right-handed bats on the market. Also, Matt Diaz signed a two-year deal with the Pirates.

The Phillies could end up turning to the trade market to add a bat. One name that has been mentioned as a possibility is former center fielder Aaron Rowand, who finished last season in a bench role with the Giants.

Bring Aaron back, you've got to love the guy, and they way he plays.

Glad they passed on Franoeur and Diaz. Somewhere down the road an actual impact player will shake loose, then we really would've regretted a lateral signing

Reyes was so bad against lefties last year. He was amazing against righties, though. Weird.

Lefties hit him only at s238 lifetime so he should be fine. He is an upgrade on what we have now. He and Bastardo should be fine to go along with Madson, Contreras and Lidge.

do NOT bring back rowand unless the giants are willing to eat a major part of his salary.

Sorta like the thought of Rowand in center and Vic in right again. Brown has shown by his actions he needs some time learning under a Hall of Famer at AAA to learn what it takes to be a major leaguer.

Good to see Francoeur eliminated; less sure about Diaz. I said it before: Amaro learned from Gillick and he will patch and fill this season, not add anything significant to the payroll. Many contracts will be going off the books after 2011, so presumably they are looking at their guys in the low minors moving through the ranks quickly this year and making the big club in 2012 or becoming pieces in trades for 2012. This season will be the final one for much of the core, so Amaro is betting that the team that won 97 games last season will be able to do it once more, even without Jayson Werth.

Did any poster actually watch Rowand last season? He was awful and not much better the year before when he fanned 125 times in 144 games, while hitting .261. He stands to make $12 million this season; why in the world would the Phillies want to bring him back? He played hard in centerfield, but Victorino is much better there, covers much more ground, has a cannon for an arm. Not likely to happen.

The phillies are tring to corner the market on Dennys and Dannys.
And Rowand is washed up. He couldnt play for the Giants, what makes you think he would be an upgrade over Francisco/Brown/Gload/Phanatic platoon in right field.
And he makes at least 12 mill a year.
