Rollins hitting sixth tonight

Sunday, June 7, 2009, 6:24 PM
A couple quick pre-game notes, which I'll try to expound upon later when I have time. You'll probably find the fact that Jimmy Rollins is hitting sixth the most interesting, but the most impactful note tonight is that outfielder Matt Stairs is not at the game. He's attending his daughter's high school... Read more

Feliz: I just missed it

Saturday, June 6, 2009, 2:29 AM
You could say that Pedro Feliz makes the play 99 out of 100 times, and his .974 fielding percentage from a year ago would make you pretty close to being factually accurate. But the exception occurred last night, as a hard ground ball from Russell Martin with two out in the ninth inning bounced off... Read more

'Nuff Said

Friday, June 5, 2009, 1:27 AM
I wrote about 800 words on Cole Hamels' complete game shutout for the newspaper. Orlando Hudson summed it up in considerably less. "He stuck it up our (rear ends) the last two times we faced him," the Dodgers infielder said. "What more can you say?" The Dodgers didn't need to... Read more

Victorino downplays injury

Thursday, June 4, 2009, 9:11 PM
One day after soreness in his left hip caused him to remove himself from the Phillies’ 5-1 win over the Padres in the sixth inning, center fielder Shane Victorino was out of the line-up for the first of a four-game series against the Dodgers. But the center fielder downplayed any concern about... Read more

Thursday, June 4, 2009, 7:43 PM
Phillies pitcher Brett Myers had successful hip surgery today in New York, the Phillies said in a statement. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bryan Kelly. "Myers had arthroscopic bony spur and labral debridement," the statement said. Debridement is becoming a familiar term in Philly sports... Read more

The catch

Thursday, June 4, 2009, 1:52 AM
Greg Dobbs said it felt like hitting a home run. And, when you really think about it, his racing stab of a line drive by Chris Young in the second inning might have been worth more than a dinger. After all, the Padres had the bases loaded and with two outs all three runners were going on contact, leading... Read more

Like Fine Wine?

Wednesday, June 3, 2009, 1:08 AM
UPDATE -- 11:14 a.m. -- I'm not sure what I was drinking when I banged this blog post out last night. Bastardo is scheduled to pitch again Sunday, not Tuesday, so the Phils wouldn't be able to skip that spot in the rotation this time... Read more

Myers surgery set for Thursday

Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 9:20 PM
A quick update on Brett Myers. . . The righthander will undergo his surgery on Thursday in New York under hip specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly. No official timetable for recovery has been set, although Myers had previously been told he could return to competition in three to four months. His season is... Read more

The Trade Formula

Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 12:46 PM
I thought I'd expand a little bit on a story that was in the paper today. . . Relatively speaking, trades are rare, and they are rare because there are a plethora of variables that factor in to the consummation or ruination of any deal. To me, the equation every team must run before settling on a... Read more

Mayberry sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley

Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 1:41 AM
John Mayberry Jr.'s first big league stint was a short one. The Phillies sent the power-hitting outfielder back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following their 5-3 win over the Padres Monday night. The move was made in advance of the activation of lefthander Antonio Bastardo, who will start against San Diego... Read more
