Lidge has flexor tendon repaired

Closer Brad Lidge had surgery Wednesday to repair his flexor pronator tendon, but the Phillies said in a statement that they are hopeful the righthander will be ready "close to Opening Day."

Lidge, who blew 11 saves and posted a 7.21 ERA after going 41-for-41 in save opportunities in 2008, kept the periodic pain in his elbow under wraps during the regular season.

"Brad could be one to two weeks behind in spring training," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement, "but, overall, we feel very good about his recovery time."

    Interesting...this went from him just having loose bodies in his elbow, to having full blow tendon surgery...I wonder if he kept this to himself all year. If he did, it was really stupid to do so. Phils need to find a guy who has closing experience to spell Lidge next year.

    Really? Lidge of all people was pitching hurt all year? LIDGE? Who struggled so mightily? LIDGE!!!??? Someone needs to be fired over this.

    Why on god's green earth did he keep it "under wraps." And under wraps from whom, Charlie and the coaches, or did they too keep it under wraps? I can't believe the latter. And if Lidge kept it under wraps and kept blowing saves, he's the one who should be fired. If Charlie and the other coaches kept it under wraps and kept sending him to the mound anyway, THEY should be fired!

    It may have been nothing more than Lidge was favoring his right knee and due to a different arm motion he compentsated leading to this injury. My guess this came about mid season. If he had the procedure then, he would be gone for the season.

    Lidge was pitching with knee pain all year which everyone knew about. He was rested 2 different times for it and his mechanics were adjusted to compensate for it. So if he was also hiding a small amount of periodic elbow pain, then there's no way anyone would have suspected more because everyone knew he was hurt with the knee anyway. A lot of pitchers that get injured hide their pain. It happens all the time and happened with several pitchers on our staff this year.

    Thanks, Brad, and anyone else who knew, about which I can only speculate and suspect. You and your physical ailments transformed a thrilling comeback an potential victory in Game Four of the World Series into into a disheartening defeat, and with it the World Series, as well.

    I'm with Phanforever--thanks to Brad Lidge and Chad Durbin for pitching during the season with physical problems you hid from the Phils' own medical people. And thanks Brad for almost taking Ryan Madson down with you as he struggled mentally and physically trying to fit into the closer's role while you were on the DL. Either way, you almost totally ruined his season also. At least Scott Eyre was more honest about his injury. Now, finally we have a bonafide scapegoat for the 2009 season: BRAD LIDGE. Don't you dare come back next year until you're ready, you idiot.
