I devoted most of today's story to Brett Myers turnaround yesterday. I don't know if I've ever seen someone be so bad for one inning and then be so good for seven. But the Phillies offensive performance shouldn't get lost in the shuffle. They've scored 60 runs in the past five games, which is more than they'd scored in the 12 games leading up to that stretch. When this offense is clicking, it really is fun to watch.

As far as Myers goes, it remains to be seen whether this will be sort of a turning point. I asked pitching coach Rich Dubee last night if there was anyway Myers could take this performance and put it in a bottle and then use it for the rest of the season. "It's not that easy," he said. So we'll see.

Tonight, Cole Hamels is on the hill, so you have to figure the Phils have a decent shot at winning their sixth straight.

Here's the game story from last night.

re: Let's Talk Pitching-30 May 08. The most important statistics which Phillies followers should focus upon is comparative per game ERA and gross run production differential. That is to say the game by game rate by which the Phil's era and team runs produced differ from the opposing team. It doesn't matter how many runs the Phil's pitchers give up, as long as it's less than the opposing team and, we consistently score a higher average of runs per game than the opposition. It means little to say that opposition pitcher "a" has an "x" era, while our pitcher's is higher. What is important is how pitcher "a" performs in the Phil's ballyard. I haven't sat down to calculate the difference, but I'd hazard a guess that we probably are about a run and half better than the opposition at our home. Homegrown comfort level may be the reason I hear nothing but complaints about our stadium from the visiting team announcers. I love it when Keith Hernandez snears at the "bandbox", and he entones, "You can see why Utley has so many homeruns, with this stadium he plays in for half the season. Boy, if Reyes played here, no telling what he'd hit." Yeh, well, Keith old boy, there's the fence, have your team take a chance and give the Let's Go's a shot.
