Phillippe Aumont won the final spot in the Phillies bullpen two days before Opening Day.
That's the biggest news in the team's finalized 25-man roster. Well, and the team is keeping Rule 5 pick Ender Inciarate, for now. (The Phils would like to add a veteran outfielder, which may come available as other teams make their own roster decisions this weekend).
Here is the current 25-man roster:
Starting rotation
Cole Hamels
Roy Halladay
Cliff Lee
Kyle Kendrick
John Lannan
Relievers
Jonathan Papelbon
Mike Adams
Antonio Bastardo (L)
Chad Durbin
Raul Valdes (L)
Jeremy Horst (L)
Phillippe Aumont
Infielders
Chase Utley
Jimmy Rollins
Ryan Howard
Michael Young
Freddy Galvis
Kevin Frandsen
Outfielders
Domonic Brown
Ben Revere
Laynce Nix
John Mayberry Jr.
Ender Inciarte
Catchers
Erik Kratz
Humberto Quintero
Two roster notes: Outfielder Delmon Young was placed on the disabled list, as expected, and catcher Carlos Ruiz will serve a 25-game suspension beginning on Opening Day for failing a drug test for the use of a banned stimulant.
Aumont over Stutes is a terrible decision. Phillies just falling for the fact that Aumont "looks like" a pitcher, whereas Stutes is small. Now we just have an un-ready and wild pitcher on our staff in Aumont instead of an experienced and solid pitcher in Stutes. kilo_005- You are kiddin me! Aumont will be the closer in 2015.
Romus - Stutes over Aumont would have been a terrible decision. At their best, Stutes is an average big league reliever and Aumont is a stud.
phillyl0 - Aumont le géant français. Il est tres formidable..
GiveBrownAChanceCommitee - Yeah I'm not sure I agree with you there at all either, Kilo. At best Stutes wasn't anything more than mediocre, and more often than not he was not good. And he's been ouchy. In 2011 he made 57 appearances for a total of 62 innings. He had an ERA of 3.63, and if you ask me that's WAY to high for a pitcher averaging a fraction over an inning per outing. Last year's numbers don't much matter since he didnt even have 6 innings pitched all season and you can't tell anything from that. But just compare their spring numbers and it's not contest. Aumont had a WAAAAAY better spring. Better numbers across the board, including walks per 9 inn (4.3 vs stute's 7.4). Aumont is bigger, stronger, throws harder, and in my opinion has a WAY higher ceiling than stutes, so to me that's a great move.

Stues missed most of last season due to arm issues. He will benefit from building up arm strength in AAA. Aumont auditioned well in September last year and has shown nasty stuff on the hill. Agreed, he needs to show more control, but he has that ability to get anyone out at anytime. Inciarte is an interesting "keep". Once DYoung comes off the DL, don't be surprised to see some "injuries" putting either Nix/Mayberry JR. on the DL from time to time. It may even happen to Inciarte, as he trips going into the clubhouse. Quintero is on the clock, as he knows when Chooch comes back, he is a goner. I'm more curious about the final make up of the AAA starting rotation. drhoffman
Stutes spring ERA was 7.36 against mostly AAA competition. Aumont's ERA was 2.45. All things considered, i think Aumont won the job (for now) Postman 19131
Too bad there's no room for Pete Orr. He's a scrapper and a pro. He's great insurance to have if Utley or Young go down. GreenWing
I'm glad they kept Valdez. This bullpen will get a lot of work, and we may well see rotation in from some of the staff in AAA. jerseyshorefan
Green, Peter Orr is awful. EL Zorro
Looks better then last year. Sidewinder7- Really? KK and Lannan are going to make us miss Blanton and Worley. Adams looks healthy - but the bullpen is still pretty weak. The outfield is the worst in baseball (it was not last year with Pence and Victorino). Neither Young should be on a NL roster. Doc is toast. Can't see how anyone can be optimistic of this year's version of Ruin Tomorrow Jr.'s slop.

No surprise really. Galvis has been great with both the glove and his bat. Quintero has to be kept around b/c we want the pitching staff to continue hearing English spoken w/ a Spanish accent. And I've been screaming for years about having another lefty besides Bastardo in the pen. ExiledinFla

They could have waited till after today, but, so what. ExiledinFla- Stutes killed his own chances. If it had been close between him and Aumont I think they'd have gone with Stutes based on what he did in 2011. But he ended up worse than Aumont by every measure I believe. Even those things people blast Aumont for -- too many walks, not enough strikes, etc. -- I think he ended up easily outshining Stutes. Stutes has work to do.
You're not carrying Orr. He's a good minor league backup. To carry him you'd have to take someone else off the roster and give Orr a major league contract. It makes no sense whatsoever to do that. s
