The Phillies have hired an assistant hitting coach.
Former All-Star Wally Joyner will hold the role as the assistent to new hitting coach Steve Henderson.
The 50-year-old Joyner was a .289 hitter in 16 big league seasons, seven with the Anaheim/Los Angeles Angels. Joyner has previously worked as a hitting coach for the San Diego Padres for parts of the 2007 and 2008 seasons, as well as a roving minor league instructor for the club for five years (2003-07). Joyner has worked as the lead hitting instructor for MLB International’s Elite-level development programs in Italy and Brazil in the last four years.
Joyner joined a new-look coaching staff that includes Henderson, new third base coach Ryne Sandberg and bullpen coach Rod Nichols. Upon hiring Henderson, the Phillies said they would employ a second, assistant hitting coach.
The St. Louis Cardinals, who took a 1-0 lead in the NLCS on Sunday night in San Francisco, are one of the teams that used an assistant hitting coach in 2012.
Can't believe warbiscuit wasn't the first one on here to complain. dond2885

So they're now gonna pay 2 guys to "coach" J-Roll not to pop up, and for Howard not to flail wildly at every LHP slider thrown at him? Seems like a waste of money when Greg Gross and Milt Thompson got those guys not to listen for considerably less money... Doctor D
This is so Charlie can take his mind off of being the "official" hitting coach. Without a bench coach, he can totally "focus" on the game. I'm curious who will be positioning the defense without a bench coach, since historically that is the coach who positions the defense. Can Charlie manage AND position the defense? sonnybuoy01
Why the heck do we need an assistant batting coach? Isn't Manuel supposed to be some kind of hitting guru? What a waste. Just another coach for old Charley to blame when they don't hit. sdking1112
Not only does Dube have a guy looking over his shoulder from the bullpen (LVIP pitching coach), now Henderson has an assistant waiting in the wings to take over. I guess if Cholly gets the axe during the season he'll take a coach or two with him. BobbyD

I will now post something offensive about encouraging Italians do something.
Horst Muhlman lives on in all of us
Fixing Howard is just getting him to move up and in a few inches in the batters box . Then tell him not to swing at anything down and away. He has four AB's per game, so make the pitchers throw strikes. Stop swinging at there slop. They'll continue to throw it as long as he's swinging at it. I'd rather him get called out once or twice a game looking then swinging at balls off the plate. WBFO
I wouldn't put Milt Thompson in the same breath with Gross. Thompson took the rap and wasn't in Uncle Cholly's inner circle. Didn't he coach when they were all hitting? Phillip Phan- If Milt Thompson had any reputation as a hitting coach he would have been offered a position with another organization. Since then, he's only been an outfield/baserunning coach in the Astros minor league system. I guess Ed Wade hired him before he was fired.

Ryan obviously thinks he can hit those pitches! Just sayin'... DJ
Ruben has three former GM's advising him and Charlie now needs two hitting and two pitching coaches advising him. Gotta love a big baseball bureaucracy which gives a .500 team plenty of people to spread the blame around for its predicament. Dull
Mormon hitting coach.....guess who recommended him ? Times yours. NewMick314
