Domonic Brown back in Phillies lineup
After starting just one of the previous eight games with a sore left knee, Brown returns to the lineup on Labor Day.
Domonic Brown back in Phillies lineup
Ryan Lawrence, Daily News Staff Writer
Sunday night's nightmarish ending in Atlanta has been followed by a quick turnaround: almost 12 hours after leaving the visiting clubhouse at Turner Field, the Phils have checked into Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati for a Labor Day matinee with the Reds.
Despite the sleep-deprived last half day, Charlie Manuel got in a quick conversation with the only guy on the roster who figures to play a role in the 2013 outfield. Domonic Brown (left knee) was out of Sunday's lineup for the fifth straight game.
Prior to Monday's game, Manuel found Brown.
"Are you able to go?" Manuel asked.
"Yeah," Brown said.
And so Brown is back in the lineup for just the second time in the last nine games.
"It's good," Brown said. "They know what they’re doing. I've wanted to play, but it’s probably best that I use those couple days to get back right."
Brown said he's been battling left knee pain for about a month. He had been compensating for right knee pain; Brown missed 30 games at Triple A Lehigh Valley with a right knee strain from mid-June to mid-July.
Brown, who turned 25 on Monday, is just hoping to stay healthy for the final month of the season. Brown has had trouble staying on the field since spring training, when he was limited to seven games with neck, hand and hamstring injuries.
"It’s just been like that the whole year," Brown said. "But you know what, this offseason I’ll (be able to) rest a lot to make sure my body gets straight."

Just googled "Domonic Brown's injuries". Reads like a MASH Unit report. Dull
Seems like this writer cannot do an article involving Dom Brown without invoking the "only player on the Phillies roster that will play a prominent role in the Phillies' outfield next year"...Is this a continuation of the ever present DB campaign BOTH beat writers have been on?...Or is the writer continuing his dig at John Mayberry Jr, who is equally cheap, but shows superior defensive ability(as well as versatility), is a better instinctual base runner, and has the ability to flash power against LH pitching...Might a Jr/DB strict platoon sound better than the campaigning,Dave?... bearsfriend- 6 of JMJs 14 HR are against RH pitching. I know his HR rate is higher against LH pitching, but he is steadily improving against RH pitching. He really should be given a real chance at a full time gig based on his last two years and his cost effectiveness. mjc1
Mayberry doesn't figure to play a role in 2013? Says who? More nonsense passing as sports reporting from Murphy perhaps? wo_fat- Apologies to Murph, as this was posted by newbie (and I've liked most of what I've read) Ryan Lawrence(my bad)...but I'm with you in that I wish the media would let this nightmare just play out before "annointing" players...Glad it's a matinee today, as last night's punch in the gut left me still gasping...tough matchup for Cloyd in the "Great American Flyball is a Home Run" ballpark against mean hitters and a nasty Johnny Cueto...Let's see how this group takes to the adversity of last night's fiasco.

what -- no Martinez? warbiscuit
If David Murphy says it, it must be so.
But what about that Michael Martinez? His unique skill set both at the plate and in the field were on full display as the Fightin' Phils' starting RF in Atlanta yesterday. Just wait until Brittle Brown gets hurt again (you won't have to wait very long) and you'll regret the day you sold the versatile little Mini-Mart short. dasher
It seems Dom Brown gets the same slobbering treatment from the media like POTUS! Phillip Phan
"Are you able to go?" Manuel asked.
"Yeah," Brown said.
Chollie's longest conversation and deepest thinking this year... warbiscuit
Echoing bearsfriend, my apology to Murphy. I guess I read this article faster than a Rollins sprint to first. dasher
Phils always lose a few consecutive games after one of Papelbon incredible give-aways .... and yes, Papelbon-apologists, turning a sure win with a big lead into a devastating loss is infinitely worse than your garden-variety blown save as other closers are apt to do on occasion...anyway get usd to it, becuase Papbum is signed through 2016 and even Dodgers are unlikley to take on this piece of sh$% warbiscuit
Lets see if this team can still maintain a pulse. Cueto in day games is ridiculously good and Cloyd in Cincy could be tough. Win this and get back on a roll, you never know. I would like to see a lot of Schierholtz when his foot is rested a bit more. He could be a nice part of the platoon next year. I would be ok with a Mayberry/Schierholtz platoon (as long as they sign Swisher)..could be very productive and both play good D. I'm rooting for Brown but not sold yet, not even close..he works the counts well but honestly thats about all i have seen. I know hes not healthy so hard to say this is the level of productivity to expect. philsfan in the atx
given the Phils lineup, their rookie starter against a Cy Young favorite, the hopelessness of their situation, and the hope that continued losing hastens the departures of Amaro and Manuel, today's loss would also be fortuitous, to help Ceuto vs. Mets' Dickey warbiscuit- How come no more "If it wasn't for RAJ Kendrick would be out of baseball" statements? Oh BTW Carls Pena was 2 for 3 yesterday to raise his average to 191!!! Congratulations.
DogBiscuitthedope
I'll be interested to see how they compete today, some teams would use a gut punch like last night as an excuse to roll over and quit today. We'll see if the Phils are "some teams". drbob1
If Papelbon had 1/2 Lidge's heart he'd be 10x as good. He's repeating Lidge's 2009 season without having an injury excuse. No wonder the Sox let him go and the Yankees, Dodgers, Braves, etc. watched eagerly as he signed here. He's the Manchurian closer, planted here to stop sabotage any momentum. wistahoma
Ty Cloyd Fever !!! Get it ? biagio77
If you lose interest in the telecast, just count the number of times Wheeler says "really." If he says "really, REALLY" it counts double.
Really! dasher
Papelbum has had 8 atrotious outings (plus 3 more outings in which he has given up runs):
5/7 vs. Mets 3 ER, Loss;
6/4 vs. LA 1 ER, Loss;
6/23 vs TB 2 ER, Blown save;
7/5 vs. Mets 2 ER, BLown save, Loss;
7/18 vs. LA 2 ER, Blown save;
7/21 vs SF 1 ER, Loss
8/21 vs Cinc. 1 er, Loss;
9/2 vs. Atl, 3ER, Blown save, Loss
that's not "elite" -- it's terrible warbiscuit- So dopey idiot loser tool, giving up 1 run is now considered "atrotious"? 31 saves this year, who would have saved those games this year on planet MORONBISCUIT?

Phils always lose a few consecutive games after one of Papelbon incredible give-aways .... and yes, Papelbon-apologists, turning a sure win with a big lead into a devastating loss is infinitely worse than your garden-variety blown save as even good closers are apt to do on occasion --but they don't constently destroy their team's season warbiscuit- LOL, good call dopey
DogBiscuitthedope
Ever notice that IDIOTBISCUIT babbles on and on about Paplbon& Howard and never once tell us who would play 1st or close on planet TOOLBISCUIT? Oh wait, I apologize, Madson & Carlos Pena. LOL, what a moronic dope DogBiscuitthedope
The only three things you can absolutely count on are death, taxes, and warbiscuit calling someone a POS after a loss. Grazman
AND the Phils didn't lose even one consecutive game beating Cueto. Warbiscuit is wrong again... Grazman
Note that Brownie wants "to rest a lot" during off season. Its called the "Utley knee treatment program."
Great win today. Imagine if RAJ had shutdown Worley 5 starts ago and brought up Cloyd. Yeah, I know, its about starting the service time clock ticking. Hard to believe, Harry. NewMick314
brownie, keep plugging away. the true phils fans know you can live up to the hype. dont give up. we've got your back. zwarte piet
So essentially Brown has a good eye and a good arm and that's about it. Injury prone and no power equals not in the outfield next year please. lazyboy
Brown the only guy on the roster for 2013 outfield? What about Mayberry? I'd take him any day over Brown. At this point, I'd take Ruf over "I need rest" Brown. How about hitting the weight room and make yourself stronger. That's what Ruiz did and he's having a career year before he got hurt. ronin32
Mayberry has been playing pretty well lately. He's been the best plaery lately, you could argue, like last year when he had enough playing time and is left alone. The kid is a good player, leave him alone. He'll hit 25 HRs in a full season and he'll play pretty good defense anywhere he plays. EL Zorro
@dasher and bearsfriend, I believe the writers have to follow. They work for the Phillies now.
EL Zorro- The Dom Brown love affair compared to JMJ is due to the fact that DB is "their guy", who they drafted, whereas Mayberry, who was drafted twice in the first round, came over as a result of a trade. Guys who run sports teams always do this, fall in love with who they picked so they can show the world how smart they are, and ignore other talent because they didn't discover them. JMJ is better at 4 out of the 5 tools compared to Brown, he doesn't get hurt, and he seems to be smart enough to not study at the slow moving feet of one JStroll. Let Mayberry play, build the team in other areas, and save money so the bullpen can get better. mjc1
- I understand the justification RAJ's trying to prove, as DB was their "untouchable" as many really good position prospects went away instead... (D'arnaud,Taylor,Gose,Villar,Singleton,Santana)...but my beef is more with gelb and Murphy, who both started their beats a few years ago (when DB was the craze), and it's almost like partisan coverage in regards to him, with Jr, yes, as the Jan Brady middle child.

Hate to think where we'd be without Papelbon. Except for Frandsen's error, Papelbon had another save. gilbi
What ever writer bad mouths Mayberry knows his baseball. The man may have secondary skills but he is one of the worst hitters in baseball . It is customary at this time of year when innings pitched takes it toll for weak hitters like Mayberry to pad their batting stats with a few hits. Do not be fooled ...this man does not belong in the major leagues. He's had his chance and he has proved he is a failure!!! fafink
Thank god we got Papelbon. If we didn't have him we have one of the worst bullpens in the history of baseball. He has 31 saves, a whip of 1.06 and an ERA near 3.0. Lights-out Lidge had other good relievers and pitched for a winning team. Papelbucks pitches for a losing team. So what if he hangs one every now and then (six times). It's not like there's a pennant hanging on every pitch. fafink
fafink, that's one of the most moronics posts I have ever read. So you rather have a player play good early in the season than in August, September and October, when men separate from the boys? Remember Polanco last year? Remember the Phillies in the playoffs after their record 102 wins? EL Zorro
Mayberry has gotten twice as many ABs against righthanders. Still the 6 HRs provide some hope for JMJ against righthanders and he has been getting better swings against them. Don w
