Sunday night's nightmarish ending in Atlanta has been followed by a quick turnaround: almost 12 hours after leaving the visiting clubhouse at Turner Field, the Phils have checked into Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati for a Labor Day matinee with the Reds.
Despite the sleep-deprived last half day, Charlie Manuel got in a quick conversation with the only guy on the roster who figures to play a role in the 2013 outfield. Domonic Brown (left knee) was out of Sunday's lineup for the fifth straight game.
Prior to Monday's game, Manuel found Brown.
"Are you able to go?" Manuel asked.
"Yeah," Brown said.
And so Brown is back in the lineup for just the second time in the last nine games.
"It's good," Brown said. "They know what they’re doing. I've wanted to play, but it’s probably best that I use those couple days to get back right."
Brown said he's been battling left knee pain for about a month. He had been compensating for right knee pain; Brown missed 30 games at Triple A Lehigh Valley with a right knee strain from mid-June to mid-July.
Brown, who turned 25 on Monday, is just hoping to stay healthy for the final month of the season. Brown has had trouble staying on the field since spring training, when he was limited to seven games with neck, hand and hamstring injuries.
"It’s just been like that the whole year," Brown said. "But you know what, this offseason I’ll (be able to) rest a lot to make sure my body gets straight."
