More than a few familiar faces were back in South Philly Thursday afternoon. It was team photo day.
It was also the day Freddy Galvis talked to reporters for the first tie since suffering a season-ending back surgery in June and, late rin the same month, was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
A team spokesman said Galvis would not address the latter issue; the team and the infielder are standing by the initial statements released after the incident.
Galvis, however, did speak confidently about his rehab from fracturing a vertebrate in his back. He's been out of a brace for "about two weeks" and has already began light baseball activities, including running, fielding and hitting.
"It’s getting much better," Galvis said. "I don’t feel any pain."
Galvis said the plan is to get back on the field "around September 15" in instructional games in Clearwater. He'll then play shortstop in the Venezuelan Winter League to make up for the lost at-bats since landing on the DL over two months ago.
Despite not being able to finish the season where it started, in the major leagues, Galvis wore his trademark boyish grin as he talked about the 2012 season.
"It’s not disappointing for me," he said. "For me it’s, this year, thank God I made the big leagues and I was playing good. Injuries are going to happen, that’s how baseball is, so I have to get through this."
I hope he healed, then is packaged up with someone else and given the opportunity to play elsewhere. Thanks for the few moments, but see ya Freddy.

- This guy can play any infield position. He's great defensively. He's a kid. Anybody with the eye-hand coordination he's got can learn to hit. The Phillies would be crazy to trade him away. This team has to get younger and Galvis is a big step in that direction.— Al Wilson

ON PEDS? they found what 1 part fer million. that's laughable! it was explained that he could have got it from kissing a girl or whatever! it was less than jc ramero, and ramero appealed and was exonorated. if i were him i would have appealed! i don't know why he didn't. maybe he didn't want to rock the boat, maybe he figured he was gonna miss the time due to his injury anyway and let it go. or maybe because of my last reason he figured he isn't doing anything anyway and missed the time and figured it aint happening again, so why bother appealing. and maybe the thought byhim and the team was let him serve his time he's out anyway if we appeal and he doesn'y win then we lose him for 50 games when he's healthy! it's not like he pulled a melky set up a fake website was in the 2cd year of a bustout offensive explosion. come on.— Ryne Duren

- All medical testing is fallible; I believe Galvis. I don’t understand his back injury though. Not sure I heard of it before. Will he be susceptible to the same re-injury?— terrycindyian
- Actually Terry, in the offseason, they had him pulling some heavy stuff while running in Clearwater, like football players and track and field athletes do. They wanted him to get stronger and faster. Maybe that have something to do with the injury.— EL Zorro
