De Fratus makes season debut

POSTED: Sunday, April 22, 2012, 5:33 PM

Reliever Justin De Fratus began his rehab assignment Sunday with Class A Clearwater, pitching a scoreless inning in his season debut.

DeFratus, rehabbing from a sprained right elbow, faced four batters and allowed a double to rightfield. He recorded two flyouts and a groundout in the Threshers’ 4-2 win over Brevard County as the starting pitcher.

“Another symptom free outing! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. #superstoked,” De Fratus tweeted.

De Fratus was ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the Phillies organization by Baseball America last fall.

Scheduled starter Austin Wright pitched five innings in relief of DeFratus and struck out 10. He improvoed to 3-0 on the season and has struck out 23 in 16 innings.

You'll be hearing about a couple of Austins....Wright is an 8th round pick out of Univ of Mississippi (Chicago native) last year who has skipped Lakewood, along with Austin Morgan...a third round choice out of Univ of Alabama...Both are lefties...Wright is big (6'4",235) and is a power pitcher, although his swing and miss pitch is a nasty curveball, and an elevated, but not overpowering fastball...DeFratus is good enough to be on the Phillies, yet Aumont is the jewel to the brass (more like that's who came in the Lee deal)...I'd deal Aumont for a real promising AAA prospect who rakes.

I"m so glad that there is only 146 games of "agony" left in the Phillies 2012 season. I'm a fan for over 50 years & they are playing like the old Phillies of the late 80's.Let's see how many sellouts will occur next year at CBP if they don't get their heads together.

Lefty Austin Wright was really strong in the first three innings today for the Threshers striking out eight of the first ten batters he faced. Two consecutive rain outs gave him two extra days off from his last start. Watched him come out dealing with his fastball and slider. His two seamer sets everything else up and breaks down and away from a right handed hitter. It appears to be thrown with less velocity than the one Worley throws. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in Reading soon.

I think we give the team 10 more games and we'll know where they are going. So far it's sad. A combo of Howard and Uley gone along with a bunch guys who Amaro believes in who are tooooo old.

Glad to read Charlie has decided he has to make some hard decisions!!They're heading to The Desert where it is going to be in the 100's, so they're going to find out what "Hell" actually feels like. The Whole Club is in a bad funk and bringing down a new guy every day. They need some new YOUNG BLOOD infused to stop the Hemoraging!!

Austin Hyatt is one of the very good young pitchers the Phillies have stocked in the minors. Justin DeFratus is one of the four/five outstanding relief pitchers in the minors as well.

Different Austin...Hyatt pitches for Lehigh Valley and is a real good competitor, but doesn't possess the high end stuff that would indicate a Major League career...But he ekes it out a bit, ala Kyle Kendrick...
