Matt Cain will have many suitors vying for the righthander after the season if he becomes a free agent. (David Maialetti/Staff File Photo)

I'll admit: I just returned from 96 hours in New Orleans, so my head is rather sensitive to bright lights and loud noises. But what I saw when I opened up ESPN the Magazine this morning made my brain feel like Vince Wilfork's yoga mat. Apparently, former Nationals and Reds general manager Jim Bowden has added "ESPN Insider" to the numerous media posts he holds, and in a recent edition of the network's over-sized publication he handicapped next year's free agent crop, including two young starters who are sure to draw heavy interest if they hit the market. Those starters would be San Francisco's Matt Cain and your Cole Hamels.

In addition to breaking down the likelihood of both players returning to their teams, Bowden included a bid that he would make for each pitcher.

To Bowden's credit, you can at least make a logical argument for the five-year, $90 million bid for Hamels. In reality, there is no way in hell Hamels would earn less than $20 million a year if he hit the free agent market right now. But the case for not shelling out C.C. Sabathia money pretty much makes itself when you look at the history of such long-term deals. So the offer seems somewhat reasonable. . .until you get to the part where Bowden says he would offer one more year and $42 million more to Cain.

That's right. Bowden's bid for Cain was six years, $132 million.

Unfortunately, neither Bowden nor the magazine saw fit to explain why he would hand Cain $44 million more than Hamels. Maybe because such an argument did not fit in the flashy design of the page. Or maybe because such an argument cannot be made.

Look, you can make a case for offering Hamels five years and $90 million. I wouldn't make that case. But somebody could. And you can make a case for offering Cain six years and $134 million. Again, I wouldn't. But somebody could.

What nobody can do is offer a logical explanation for why he would offer Hamels five years and $90 million and Cain six years and $134 million.

Hamels is one year older than Cain. Here is how their performances compare over the last one, two, three, four and five seasons:

In 2011:

Player ERA GS CG SHO IP ERA+ WHIP HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
Cain 2.88 33 1 0 221.2 123 1.083 0.4 2.6 7.3 2.84
Hamels 2.79 31 3 0 216.0 138 0.986 0.8 1.8 8.1 4.41

Last Two Years:

Player ERA GS CG SHO IP ERA+ WHIP HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
Cain 3.01 66 5 2 445 124 1.083 0.6 2.5 7.2 2.87
Hamels 2.92 64 4 0 424.2 136 1.081 1.0 2.2 8.6 3.86

Last Three Years:

Player ERA GS CG SHO IP ERA+ WHIP HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
Cain 2.97 99 9 2 662.2 132 1.115 0.7 2.7 7.2 2.68
Hamels 3.36 96 6 2 618.1 120 1.145 1.0 2.2 8.3 3.87

Last Four Years:

Player ERA GS CG SHO IP ERA+ WHIP HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
Cain 3.17 133 10 3 880.1 128 1.177 0.7 2.9 7.3 2.39
Hamels 3.29 129 8 4 845.2 126 1.128 1.0 2.1 8.2 3.83

Last Five Years:

Player ERA GS CG SHO IP ERA+ WHIP HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
Cain 3.26 165 11 3 1080.1 127 1.192 0.7 3.1 7.3 2.39
Hamels 3.31 157 10 4 1029.0 127 1.127 1.1 2.1 8.3 3.88

Again, Bowden offered no explanation for the disparity in his bids. The only rationale I can think of is health. Cain has averaged 33 starts over the last five years. Hamels has had some minor elbow issues. Even then, is $18 million a season much different than $22 million a season in terms of impact to your payroll in case of injury?

Take health out of the equation and there is no way you can argue that Cain's performance has been worth $4 million more per season.

Bottom line is if Hamels wants to be a Philadelphia Phillie, he will be. Ruben should and will offer nothing more than 5-6 years 100-120 Mil deal. If neither he nor his agent are interested in signing a deal like that, Ruben needs to look to trade him by July. You cant let him walk to the Dodgers for nothing.

Teams with world series aspirations don't sell at the trade deadline. Why do people keep thinking this? You acquire talent, not give it away. Just cause he doesn't have a contract doesn't mean he won't resign. They've been through this every year, and even I don't know everything about free agency, but I do know that you offer arbitration, he denies it, becomes a free agent and they bid for him. He gets a better offer and takes it they get two first round picks. You don't just give away one of the games best pitchers for minor leaguers when you want to win a world series.

You need to factor in CBP vs. SF's AT&T Park. When you look at where they pitch clearly Hamels is more valuable plus his WS/playoff record/MVP numbers. RAJ, hook him up SOON!

The BB/SO should be SO/BB. More strike outs than walks.

the most important thing for amaro to do this offseason was to get hamels locked up long-term... and not only didnt he do that, no such deal seems imminent. how long will this moron be allowed to gm this team into irrelevance?

93 wins in '09. 97 wins in '10. 102 wins in '11. Irrelevance in '12? Sounds like Warbiscuit's dim-witted half-brother is back on the narcotics.

zwarte, what a fool you are. Name all of the other current GMs who have won five straight division titles, one World Series and one other National League Pennant. Do you like Hunter Pence or not? Was Placido Polanco an upgrade at third base or not? Name all of the other pitching staffs in baseball that can match Halladay, Hamels and Lee with Papelbon as a closer. Name all of the other GMs who had teams that lead the Majors in wins for the last two seasons. zwarte, you are a know-nothing.

Yeah Cain has had the benefit of pitching most of his games in a pitcher friendly park, where as Cole has CBP. Even then the HR disparity is minor, I'd take Cole any day over most pitchers in the league.

Hey RAJ may not be perfect but what GM is and he's better than Wade was. I wish RAJ and the whole organization valued hitting as much or even close to how they value pitching but he's made the bold moves that I always hoped Phils GMs would make when we would get players past their prime like Dale Murphy or Fernando V.

I agree that they need to sign Hamels asap but maybe RAJ has a plan in mind. I never saw it coming when he traded Lee to get Roy or when he signed Lee back. Give him time...

If Hamels has a season reasonbly similar to his past 2, he will get as lucrative a contract as any pitcher to date

But hopefully not with the Phillies, right bisquick? Because you'd get more satisfaction from seeing RAJ fail rather than have Hamels for the next few years, right? Right?

they will close the deal with Hamels by all star break-assuming he really is recovered from his off season elbow surgery with no lasting effects. RAJ is correct, test the repaired goods first

sorry fansvoice Rube has no plan -- he is clueless- he lucked into signing Lee as free agent after inexplicable trade of Lee for peanuts that cost Phils the 2010 WS, and other than his acquistions of Lee and Halladay 90% of all signings and contract extensions have been awful --clueless and overmatched he wastes $170 mil. budget and Phils best prospects but neglects depth or balance and team can't win in post-season..most recent blunders are falure to get a cleanup hitter for first few months of season with Howard injured, failure to get a hitting 3rd baseman or situational lefty reliever (Willis is a joke), and wasting $50 mil. on Papelbon when Madson would have been not only cheaper but much better fit for Phils ballpark...

Statements like that are why Jim Bowden is a "former" GM and not a "current" GM.
