Philly ranked first for ‘walkability’ and new construction in Redfin report

We know Philly is walkable. We're reminded pretty regularly.

What might come as a small surprise, though, is that while Philly is pretty solidly ranked the fourth-best city for walkability, it's now been ranked first in walkable new construction. According to Redfin and Walk Score, 91 percent of new homes being built in the city have a higher walk score than the citywide score (which is already 78 for Philly).

Experts at Redfin say the local uptick has to do with some familiar sources.

"Buyers who are getting priced out of New York and Washington D.C. are flocking to Philly and developers are rushing to meet the demand" said agent Tom Lewis in a statement. "A lot of the new construction buildings are also mixed-use, which in turn is increasing walkability throughout the city."

None of this is all too surprising. And while a walkable city means all kinds of benefits (like less crime and better health), it is worth keeping in mind that this walkability boom is usually limited to one particular slice of town.
