Homeowners in New Jersey are paying the most money for their property taxes, new data from Census.gov shows.

The Garden State topped the list in Census.gov's Data Release for the second year in row with a median real estate tax bill of $7,331 in 2013. That's about a 2 percent increase from 2012, which is still the highest increase out of all the states.

Pennsylvania (median taxes: $2,521) and Delaware (median taxes: $1,240) did not make the top 10 for both the most expensive and least expensive taxes.

Homeowners in Alabama are getting the biggest tax break with a median property tax bill of $532. That's well below the national median bill of about $2,100.

Eight out of the top 10 costliest states are in the Northeast.

It's important to note that other costs, such as higher sales or state income taxes, also factor in to a homeowner's overall tax burden besides the property taxes.
