Two Society Hill row homes built by Stephen Girard are now on the market for more than $1.5 million each.

Girard, whose name can be found all over Philadelphia in schools, parks and avenues, was a banker and philanthropist who was known to have saved the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812.

He lived in Society Hill and developed several properties in the area, two of which are now for sale.

Girard's most recent home to come on the market – listed on Wednesday – is located at 330 Spruce Street. Built circa 1830, the home is listed for $1.85 million. The historic row home is 5,200 square feet, has eight bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths. It connects to a three-story cottage/guest house that has an elevator, kitchen and additional rooms. Original details noted are the pine floors, moldings, and marble fireplaces.

"The home maintains its integrity in the flooring, and in the circular, central stairway," said Olenka Santore, the listing agent. "It's just beautiful architecturally."

Santore said the most recent owner passed away after living there for 35 years.

Girard's other home for sale is a block away at 210 Spruce Street, and has been on the market for two months. Listed for $1.6 million, the Georgian-style home is 3,100 square feet and has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. It also features many original details. The seller is only the third owner of the home.
