Jon Runyan selling NJ estate for $5.8M

Jon Runyan, the outgoing congressman and former Eagles tackle, has put his 23-acre Mount Laurel estate on the market for $5.8 million.

Jon Runyan, the outgoing congressman and former Eagles tackle, has put his 23-acre Mount Laurel estate on the market for $5.8 million.

Runyan, a two-term congressman in New Jersey's third district, custom-built the home on Mount Laurel Road with his wife, Loretta, in the mid-2000s, according to listing agent Melissa Young of BHHS Fox & Roach.

"They demolished what was there," Young said. "It was an older house about 60 years old."

Runyan, who played on the Eagles from 2000 to 2008, hired famed architects David Donachy and Christopher Caulder to construct the 13,000-square-foot-plus home for him and his family.

Young said the home is unique for the Burlington County township for its secluded setting.

"It's a beautiful house," Young said. "The privacy of the 23 acres is something you don't find in the area."

Young describes the great room as one of the home's standout features.

"It's a great bar and a great hangout," she said. "Instead of having a basement underground they decided to build it above ground."

The home has five bedroom suites, each one with a large walk-in closet. There are seven full and two half baths.

The estate also features two master chef's kitchens, a game room, and three home offices. Outside, there is a pool, Tiki hut and kitchen, fireplace, and a 7-car garage.

Runyan raised eyebrows in 2009 as he announced his candidacy for the House when it was disclosed that he had taken advantage of a New Jersey state law that protects farmers. Runyan has received a tax break on 20 of his 23 acres because he keeps donkeys and sells firewood.

A phone call was not immediately returned from Runyan's spokesperson seeking comment about why he is selling now.

Young said the Runyans plan to stay in the area.
