Getting Hosed: Trulia says Philadelphians pay biggest rent premium for private washer, dryer

Trulia calcualted the difference between median rents in apartments with and without private laundry facilities. They found that on average, Philadelphians pay a 20 percent premium for a washer and dryer, equating to about $211 monthly.

Data wonks at Trulia recently conducted a semi-scientific study of rental costs in cities across America, looking specifically at the premium price put on in-unit washers and dryers. The city with the highest premium? Philadelphia.

They examined multi-family apartment buildings for five months between September 2014 and last February, calculating the difference between median rents in apartments with and without private laundry facilities. They found that on average, Philadelphians pay a 20 percent premium for a washer and dryer, equating to about $211 monthly.

Renters may want to consider how that figure stacks up against wash-and-fold services or the local laundromat.

As part of their study, Trulia also noted neighborhoods with the highest percentage of private washers and dryers, finding Conshohocken, Manayunk, Northern Liberties and Callowhill at the top of the list.

For an in-depth look at neighborhoods and the scarcity (or plethora) of laundry facilities, take a look at this interactive map. For more information on the study, including methodology, check out Trulia.
