Adobo: Philly among best cities for job seekers, apartment hunters

New jobs often come with new digs, which is probably why rental behemoth Abodo recently conducted a study of which job sectors were performing well in which cities. Match your interest with a metro area and they're hoping you'll use their listings to find your new one-bedroom.

Abodo investigated the job density in five of the nation's fastest-growing occupational areas within the 25 most populous cities in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the areas with the most job growth between 2012 and 2015 have been community and social service (think: counselors, social workers, etc.), computers and mathematics (duh), health care practitioners and technicians (a growing area just about everywhere), construction and abstraction (see: Texas) and finally, "arts, design, entertainment, sports and media" (see: your friends who are chronically underemployed).

Philadelphia came up at the top of the list for two of those categories: community and social service and health care practitioners. According to their research, the job density in Philly is nearly twice the national average for community and social service jobs, and the sector itself showed the largest growth of any category. Health care jobs are growing to accommodate an aging population, but Philly was way ahead here too. No surprise, given the number of award-winning hospitals around.

The real trick – not included in the report – would be measuring which apartments workers in each section can afford to rent. Lots of swank new construction might be an easier sell to the health care practitioners than the social workers.
