'Honeystone' on Main Line up for auction

A Main Line estate known as "Honeystone" will go up for auction on Thursday, June 19.

A Main Line estate known as "Honeystone" will go up for auction on Thursday, June 19.

The 12,800-square-foot home in Wayne sits on a property where several notable Philadelphians once lived.

The mansion is located on land that was at one time part of an estate that belonged to the Schmidt family of Schmidt's Beer. Ed Snider, chairman of the Flyers' parent company Comcast-Spectacor, also lived in a home on the same property in the early 1980s, according to public records.

Honeystone's current owner, Alvin Clemens, purchased the property in 1997 for $700,000. He knocked down what was there, and reconstructed this mansion that was designed by F.L Bissinger Inc. and built by E.B. Mahoney for $10 million.

The estate will sell to the highest bidder in a live auction at the home at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The home, which sits on 2.7 acres, will be sold in cooperation with Concierge Auctions and Kurfiss Sotheby's Realty.

Laura Brady, President of Concierge Auctions, said Clemens chose to auction off the home to gain more interest from buyers across the country and world. Clemens, an entrepreneur and partner with investment fund company Agility Partners, first listed the home for sale in Septemebr 2009 for $14.7 million. It was then withdrawn, and re-listed the following April for $12.5 million.

Brady said it is common for homeowners to auction off homes at this prestige for two reasons: "First they have a very unique property that is difficult to value," she said. "The other reason is that the seller knows that the property is going to sell within their time frame. Traditionally for a unique property, it's very difficult to have any type of time approximation."

The Artisan Revival-style home has six bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths. The master suite includes a fireplace, sitting area, walk-in closets and a large bathroom. There are also two large home office spaces adjacent to the master bedroom that overlooks the grounds.

The gourmet kitchen connects to a breakfast area with an octagon-windowed corner. There's also a dining room that can seat up to 36.

Also included in the prestigious estate are four en-suite bedrooms and a complete guest suite with kitchen.

Some unique features include an elevator that reaches all four levels of the home, a heated swimming pool and spa area, and a pool house with a complete kitchen, bar area, dressing room and bathroom.

This article also originally stated that Alvin Clemens first listed the home in 2011 for $7.9 million. He originally listed it in September 2009 for $14.7 million.
