The “man cave” – which is typically the one room in the home that the man of the house designs – has emerged over the years.

Architects and interior designers have seen everything from a simple game room with a couch and a TV, to full-blown wet bars, movie theaters and basketball courts.

Many experts have noticed the design change in the last decade or so, so that the room is more family-oriented.

“They’re becoming more of a public room where the man has more of a say,” says Kelly Nelson, a local interior designer and owner Kelly Nelson Designs. “There is that one room in the house where they are allowed to put in a bigger TV, larger furniture, and art that the wife doesn’t want in other public rooms.”

The room is a necessity for many homebuyers, says Lisa Leven Kahn, a real estate agent with Long and Foster. She says today’s high-end buyers expect the home to have a theater, media room, or something similar, while mid-range buyers also look for there to be an extra room.

“They will look for a finished basement and then they may design it to their needs,” Leven-Kahn said. Having that extra room also has a positive impact on the home’s value, she added.
