In the past week, two homes originally owned by two prominent Philadelphia families have come on the market.

Last week we reported that a Mt. Airy home built by the Strawbridges came up for sale. Now, a home in Villanova designed by their co-founders of the Strawbridge & Clothier department stores, the Clothiers, has hit the market as well.

The Strawbridges and Clothiers were Quaker friends who became business partners for the long-standing department store chain. Strawbridge & Clothier, which started out as a dry goods store and evolved into a department store, operated until 2006 when it was acquired by Macy's Inc. Its Center City branch was located at 8th and Market Streets, where the offices of the Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com are now located.

The Clothier home, built in 1895, has been on and off the market for several years. It's listed for $1.95 million – a nearly $400,000 price drop since it was last on the market. The 8,950-square-foot home has eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Standout features noted in the listing include 13 fireplaces, exceptional millwork, and high ceilings. Outside, there's a pool, tennis court and gardens.

The Strawbridge home, listed for $1.15 million, is part of a set of three homes, known as the "Three Sisters," all built by the Strawbridges in the 1880s. The 4,500-square-foot Queen Anne Victorian has been restored and improved over the years, most recently with smart technology. It has five bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths.
