If you’re stuck on looking for places that are still available and in your price range, there are many websites that provide that information for you – many of which are a bargain compared to hotel rates.

Whether you’re looking to venture to the Jersey Shore, Outer Banks, or elsewhere along the East Coast, check out these rental websites to help you plan your vacation.

1. VRBO – vrbo.com

This rental site has more than 620,000 vacation properties across the world. It has no booking fees, and allows renters to contact the owners directly. Depending on the length of your stay, it gives you night, weekly and monthly rates, as well as a calendar for availability. Properties on this site are either run by the owners or property managers.

2. Airbnb – airbnb.com

This website gives you the option of renting an entire house, just a room, or even a shared room for the budget-conscious traveler. It also allows you to link your account to your Facebook, and lets users post free listings. There’s more than 600,000 listings worldwide in more than 34,000 cities.

3. Owner Direct Vacation Rentals - ownerdirect.com

This website provides a customer service rep for renters, and allows a 24-hour grace period to confirm the details of a booking. In four simple steps you can find your ideal vacation home: selecting a destination and property, finalizing the trip details with the help of ownerdirect.com; getting introduced to the owner, and finally, completing the booking.

4. FlipKey - flipkey.com

Powered by Trip Advisor, this rental site shows you its top vacation rental destinations on its homepage. It also doesn’t charge a booking fee, and allows guests to search by price, available deals, property type, and more. There’s a “recently viewed” tab so guests can easily go back to multiple properties they’ve looked at. Guest reviews also provide the renter with more valuable information.

5. CouchSurfing - couchsurfing.org

For those looking for a free stay, this is the site. CouchSurfing offers everything from a free stay on someone’s couch, to dinners and activity partners. You can either connect with Facebook or sign up with your e-mail address to browse couches in more than 100,000 cities. Both “surfers” and hosts are required to create profiles.
