- He says we need Utley (or a decent replacement) by June First. I disagree, I think we need a replacement by May first. If it is a replacement brought in via trade, and the one being traded is Big Joe....this guy better be more than just a part-timer. My feeling is we need Valdez ready to move to almost ANY spot on the field as an emergency 'plug-in'. And we cannot afford to leave him at second base for an extended period of time.....say more than three weeks. For while I love his glove, his stick is but a wick!(Yeah, I know....but it sure does sound cool!)— TBear

- Maybe if Utley rests for the first two months, he has a chance to get his first extra base hit after July 4th. Most overrated player in the league. Go look at his stats for his career. And by the way, he plays mediocre defense and makes bad defensive decision on a nightly basis.— UncleStosh
- The more I think about the title of this, the more I want to get deeper with Phil. Will we have more injuries than the average team? Will we have more than last year? Why will we have the injuries we will have? What is the overall cause of the injuries we will have? Will they be because of random act or some form of process? Will they be long-term or short? Will they have a theme or just individual plots? Details friend. We need details.— justacarpenter
- Conlin thinks Valdez will be fine until Utley returns and Francisco can replace Werth's power numbers. UncleStosh: I beg to differ. Utley is no Hall of Famer, but last year his numbers suffered because he hurt his band stealing a base. The Washington Post is bragging up a 2B prospect right now with these words (no lie): "In 3-4 years, this guy will be 90% of Chase Utley." And that was praise. Go read it.— eman

I thought that one up myself.
And I agree about baseball players being somewhat soft, but it's fair to remember that the higher paid an athlete is, the more careful his or her handlers will be with injuries. Also the sheer number of games that they play creates more caution, or less willingness to have performance compromised by nagging or prolonged injury. that is, not many days of rest to recuperate between games. Hockey players are another breed altogether. Blood on the ice? No problem...— Eephus - With this aging team, injuries will be a daily announcement— eaglesman1
I'll never understand the pessimism that these Philadelphia writers bring to the forefront. It's always the down-side. I can't imagine them saying something positive unless it was a free meal at the Palm.— NRGjunk- Like the said on DNL if you panic in March get a dog. I guess everyone thinks we are the only ones with guys getting injured. PP is fine, Lidge is not done yet. Chase is the only guy with an injury that seems bad. Now when the starters start falling then I will be worried.— pattymac3
- As a die hard philly fan, I have always loved being able to read the sports pages from wherever I've lived, from Stamford, CT to West Palm Beach, but for the first time, I am switching my home page away from this ongoing constant dribble - the absurd false reporting on the Eagles DC, the sky is falling predictions on the Phillies, etc. Its just absurd and a waste of my time reading about nothing disguised as reporting. I understand the need to have content, but come on...— Jeff in Langhorne
