LONDON -- Sixers coach Doug Collins was broadcasting the Olympic semifinal between Spain and Russia when it became official. The NBA office had approved the stunning four-team deal that brings center Andrew Bynum to Philadelphia.

To say Collins was happy would be understating it. The only possible negative is that he has to wait a couple months to get his radically rebuilt team on a basketball court.

Collins had a lot to say. Here's some quick hits. There will be more in The Inquirer and here on philly.com tomorrow.

On big changes after a good season: "I thought it was incredible what our guys did. I thought we maxed out our time. For us to take the next step, we were going to have to make some changes. One of the keys one was having to amnesty Elton (Brand). It was the only way to get any flexibility. I think a lot of people felt like we were doing all these things for salary cap room next year, but we had in our sights, could we get in the (mix) for Andrew Bynum. He might be the best low-post center in the NBA. You can throw the ball into him, he can score, he can defend, he can rebound. He's from New Jersey and I think he was looking forward to coming back East."

On the impact: "We think we've gotten bigger on the front line. We're more athletic. We're bigger on the perimeter, we've added shooting. All the things we set out to do, we think we've done that. Miami is still obivously the class of the East, but we think we can line up and play with most teams now."

How it came together: "We had three teams that we locked in to doing it. But Orlando was looking for a home for Dre. At the last minute, Denver came into the picture to be the fourth team. For them to move Dre and get Aflalo and Harrington was the thing that really pushed it over the top and got them to do the deal."

On being aggressive: "The thing I love is our owner has been very, very committed to making things happen. Amnestying EB was a big thing. You have to be realistic when a team is maxed out and make changes. Josh Harris and I always talk about intelligent risk. His business is built on intelligent risks, and we think we've taken a lot of intelligent risks.

On the departure of Andre Iguodala, traded to Denver: "We're going to miss Dre. The thing I'm happy for Dre about -- the last two years, he finished on an uptick. What he did to help us win, the Chicago game where he goes the length of the floor and makes to free throws to put us into the next round, the way he defended (against Boston in the second round). I wish Dre well. He's been on a world championship team, he's been on the all-defensive team, he's been an All-Star, he has a chance to win a gold medal. The two years I've known him, good things have happened for him."

On Iguodala's reaction: "I'm going to talk to him before the (U.S.-Argentina semifinal) game here. My son Chris saw him in the hotel today. He said, `Dad, he's fine. He was in good spirits.' We had to wait until it went through. The conference call just went through. I'm going to thank Dre for everything and wish him well. It's interesting how things work. I believe we open up with Denver."

On getting a dominant center: "You've got to have a good big man. You have to be able to throw that ball in the post."

I'm a Lakers season ticket holder, but a Sixers fan first. Bynum is extremely immature and injury prone. His attitude is horrible and he's not someone you want to root for. DC has some major work ahead of him in getting through to this kid.

Iron Giant: I mentioned that possibility elsewhere, much like the Lakers two seasons ago with Odom, Bynum, and Gasol, the human tree trunks.

intelligent risks? I like that. DC may finally win a championship (I am not a basketball fan of DC. But I will be rooting for his success). 16 million? It is nothing. Think about it. Sixers will probably sell out or nearly sell out for 2012-2013 season (and possibly another five season after that). That is truly intelligent risks to take.
    Josh has a whole sense.
People who are successful in the past are more likely going to be successful in the future. I like Sixers chances.

Bynum and gasol were not happy playing with Bryant in LA. It has to do with busting your hump down in the trenches and then watching the selfish Bryant shoot 30 shots a game. Anyone who has played on the same team as a Kobe Bryant can relate to this. Bryant's selfish play was an issue in LA,even Phil Jackson made comments regarding Bryant's style of play. Bynum's attitude could be a reflection of this discontent. I expect Bynum to do well in the Sixers team oriented offense.

I hope one of these reporters asks Bynum if he still plans to go to Germany next month for that Orthokine regenerative surgery Kobe had

Its an amazing move.. I just wouldnt have given Orlando Harkless packaged with a first round pick to go along with the one we gave to miami. Truth is if the Sixers lose him next year it will hurt.

Losing the draft picks in the trade isn't really a huge problem. If we lose Bynum this team will probably struggle to get out of the league's basement as constructed. The picks are lottery protected, so we'd be able to keep high draft choices and rebuild that way. If we don't lose Bynum and end up winning lots, we only lose the chance to draft future role players, which we can get in free agency.

Who do you all think will be moved after 12/19? Hawes? Kwame? Wright? Nick Young? That's like $18 million right there. $21 if you throw in Lavoy. Thad could be packaged if they can get a better player. I'd keep an eye on how happy Kevin Love is in Minnesota, Chris Paul in LA, Josh Smith in Atlanta etc. Hopefully it's Philly's time to build a super-team and outside of Bynum I'd trade anybody else to get more all-stars here but I'd like to keep certain pieces if possible (Moultrie, Jrue if they plan on giving him the max). Look for players to want to come to Philly to play alongside Bynum especially if he re-signs in the summer.

hawes and kwame for sure i think will be gone. if brown plays well maybe they will keep him because hes cheap, but hawes is gone. i dont think they will get rid of young or wright because their contracts will expire at the end of the year anyways. that 18 mil you speak of will go to bynum and jrue (say 10 more million in salary for both combined) so that leaves 8 million left. if they trade richardson also, they will have enough money to throw to josh smith, al jefferson, paul milsap, among others. i imagine if any pf jrue, turner, or thad plays poorly with bynum, theyl be gone too. imagine a starting lineup of bynum, smith, thad, turner, and jrue with allen, moultrie, and others coming off the bench. that will be a championship contending lineup.

In other news Meeks is now a Laker.

Typo 12/15...Meeks now a Laker so he'll be playing with Dwight Howard, Kobe, Gasol, Nash. The rich get richer. He just better hit his 3's! lol Hopefully Bynum is a start to building a super-team here in Philly. If he re-signs you have to explore building around him even if you gotta give up youth. Nothing is guaranteed even with a super-team took Miami 2 years. Expecting a Lakers/Heat finals next season. Don't count out the old teams which are still sticking around (Spurs & Celtics) and OKC which is young and getting better with experience. Durant, Harden & Westbrook are getting good Olympic experience. So where does Bynum/Richardson put us in the standings? Orlando is out of the playoff picture, Brooklyn hasn't won anything yet or even gotten to the playoffs, New York was only 1 game better than us in the regular season pre-Bynum. We almost took the Celtics out again pre-Bynum. Chicago might not make the playoffs with Rose missing most of next season. Expect Doug, Rod and ownership to do whatever it takes to keep Bynum happy and wanting to come back. This team still could look very different even from what it is right now.

Turner and Hawes still have room to develop their games. For that matter, so does Jrue. This is a very nice nucleus, and adding Bynum makes everything else look better.

The move is expensive (4 first round picks-if you realize that Iggy, Vuc..,Harkless were Philly 1st rounders), risky, but definitely worth taking. Management realized that the team got to the second round with a lot of guts, luck and good coaching, but it needed better shooters and a low post presence. The signings and trade have addressed these problems admirably. I'll miss Iggy, but I think that the team improved to the point that they may be the 3rd best team in the East. I'd rather have this team than the Celtics, Knicks, Indiana or Toronto. We'll see.

You don't drive a Bentley everyday. Sit Bynum for 25-30 games. Get him down to 260-270. That front court looks really, Really good. I like the deal.
