Reid's in a fix

Did Andy Reid make a mistake in naming Juan Castillo defensive coordinator?
Yes. He’s obviously overmatched.
No. The players have to step it up.

The Eagles are officially in freefall.

Andy Reid’s team, which came into the season with Super Bowl aspirations, is a mess right now. Forget the scoreboard, where the Eagles blew a 23-3 lead to lose 24-23 to the San Francisco 49ers. The real story is on the field, where Reid’s team looked disorganized and at times disinterested.

A week after Reid said he would fix the problems that plagued the Eagles in come-from-ahead losses to the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants, the very same problems cost them this must-win game against the lowly 49ers.

Turnovers. Michael Vick threw another interception. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin fumbled away the Eagles’ last chance to salvage the game.

Red zone misery. The Eagles struggled inside the 20 again, the lowlight being Ronnie Brown’s ingenius decision to throw the ball out of a pile at the 1-yard line. The resulting fumble cost the Eagles at least 3 points in a one-point loss.

Poor tackling. The Eagles safeties and linebackers continue to believe they are devastating hitters who can decleat an opponent with sheer power. They’re not, and they again bounced off opponents who continued running with the ball.

Collapsing defense. After blowing fourth-quarter leads in Atlanta and at home to the Giants, the defense began its weekly disappearing act in the third quarter.  The Niners scored two touchdowns in the third, then capped the comeback with an all-too-easy score with 3 minutes left.

Worse still, the Eagles’ highly hyped, highly paid cornerbacks played as if tackling opponents was not in their job description. Asante Samuel and Nnamdi Asomugha both appeared to give up on big gains by the Niners.

Those recurring problems were joined by some fresh new worries. Rookie kicker Alex Henery, a fourth-round draft pick, missed two routine field goals in the second half. Either of those might have been the difference between losing and winning.

The Niners were not exactly a powerhouse coming into this game. Their defense was among the worst-ranked in the league. But they were able to blitz Vick, manhandle the smallish receivers and generally abuse the center of the Eagles offensive line.

So the Eagles are 1-3 after opening the season with a victory in St. Louis. Their three-game losing streak makes them a combined 1-6 in their last seven games, including a playoff loss to Green Bay.

In the Niners, the NFL schedule gave Reid a perfect opportunity to fix some of the major problems that have plagued this team. Instead, the Niners gave him one of the worst and most dispiriting losses of his 13-year tenure.

There is a lot more to fix and, with road games against surprisingly good Buffalo and Washington teams coming up, little time to fix it.

all of these problems point to reid...castillo, refusal to draft a lb, inability to draft OL, deciding on a rookie kicker, inept offensive scheme, poor game mgt....on and on and on....will lurie have the balls to can Reid....this is despicable.

Right on, Dave. If you were writing a comedy you couldn't come up with a funnier story than making pre-season Super Bowl predictions, making your offensive line coach the defensive coordinator, having your back literally throw the ball away on the other team's one yard line and blowing a 23-3 lead in the second half.

    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
FIRE ANDY REID...and don't forget to get rid of that loser O coordinator Mornhinweg as well. HOW can they be up 20-3 and fail to understand that running the ball is also part of the offense? WHEN are they also going to recognize that maybe the wide receiver screen isn't the only screen pass play that should be run....HELLO...Shady is just waiting for his number to be called.
Absolutely ridiculous that we're going to have to listen to another of the "this is on me" press conferences.....
I've defended you enough Andy...TIME TO GO.
    FIRE ANDY REID!!

I have often said that as long as McNabb was QB and Reid was coach, the Eagles would never be a Super Bowl Champ. 50% of this was solved, 50% to go.

I'm not sure it's Reid's in a fix....... I think it's more like the fix is in. That's the only explanation I can think of for such a monumental collapse with some incredibly stupid plays. Brown.. are you kidding me? Fix was definitely in.

You're dead on Phil. However, I can't see the "all in/gold standard" turning this around. So only one fix is needed: send Andy (and Marty) packing. Actually, I can't wait to see how surly he is this week during his press conferences.

Reid, simply refuses to hire top quality people. he surrounds himself with 2nd class coaches so they can never be in a position to take his place. Its about time the Philly Press started asking him direct and tough questions and if he walks out of the press conference, show it...let everyone see how bad a coach and non stand up person he truly is!

I've lived and died with this team since 1970 through good times and bad but this season has been absolutely the most depressing of them all. I've also been a Reid backer for all these years but it has to end on Jan 1st 2012. The lack of discipline and passion I see in the players is unforgivable. The 4th quarter meltdowns, poor tackling, gadget plays, red zone inefficiency are one thing but an ordinary offensive line coach who is now a poor D coordinator mixed in with poor draft selections and a head coach who knows everything has taken a toll. I'll always be an Eagles fan, its in my blood, but this season has proven to be a character builder for fans. Charlie Garner 25 is right. Time to move on. Go Phillies.

The losses always hurt more than the wins, I definitely feel you on that one. But 1-3 is not terrible, 2 wins in a row will break even and people will believe in the Eagles again.

Andy Reid should be fired immediately. Bill Cowher is available along with Jon Gruden and Jeff Fisher. The defense is awful. This team is now the nightmare team. The kicker they drafted is a joke. Next loss is Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. Will be 1-4

That's two games Maclin has cost the Eagles by count (but by no means am I saying it was his fault-just cost us chances to come back). Dropped pass on that 4th down play from Kaufka and now the fumble at the end when we were driving both times!

All Sheridan's points and the subsequent posts are spot on. All the ill-advised personnel decisions (involving squandered draft choices, undervalued veterans, and overmatched coaches) that were glaringly obvious to all but a select few have come home to roost. Sadly, this team has taken on the persona of its zombie-like coach. There's no point in caring what happens the rest of the season.

Everyone is gone except for Reid, team still looks like something the greyhound dropped just before it won the big race. Reid must go.

Also when coaches leave they always say the players need to hear a new voice, that time is NOW !!! And to all the Philly reporters minus Les Bowen, grow a pair & stop babying Reid.

    REID MUST GO!

He is totally responsible for the miserable play because of his miserable decisions, strategic, tactical and game day. He is and always has been in over his head, and overrated. He'd probably make a decent fantasy football coach, but it's time to move in a new direction at the top.

I agree with another poster, however -- Jeffrey Lurie is a weenie with no balls, and will probably keep Reid until the end of the year. Too bad.

I root for all Philadelphia teams, but this one is trash at the top, which is why it's trash at the bottom.

I've been a Reid supporter up to this point, but must admit it's now time for him to go. The Eagles will be in a race with the Colts for top pick next year. Get a coaching staff now to prepare for it. Come on Lurie, the only way to satisfy your fans is to fire Reid. Show the guts that Andy now lacks. This team has no spine.

Mc Nabb and now Vick. Athletes at QB. Neither can put the ball in the end zone from red zone. Jeff Lurie and his social engineering comes home to roost. But nothing will change until the idiots in the stands stay home and force lurie to get a coach and a QB with brains.

Phil, Of all the posts over the years on this site regarding the Eagles, none has been more accurate and on-point than yours right here. Why the Eagles "brain trust" feels that the best option is to have an athletic quarterback is beyond me. Would much rather have a smart quarterback (Brady, Montana, P. Manning, and yes, Garcia etc.) running the show on the field. The Eagles will NEVER win the SB until they hire a coach who understands this, as well as respects the importance of a sold running game. The Reid experiment has proven to be incapable and ineffectual. Time to move on.

LOL at anyone who can focus on the QB play as an issue after witnessing these last 3 weeks. Probably every NFL QB except Brady, Rodgers and perhaps Brees would be 1-6 in the last 7 games with this horrific defense, this steadfast refusal to run the ball, this inability to address long-standing problems such as poor tackling and utter failure in short-yardage situations. Those who focus on the QB, much like those who did earlier obsessed on McNabb, are as ideological, and thus intellectually inflexible, and thus dim-witted as Andy Reid himself.

Wow, the brain dead can type. So players are making lame attempts to tackle, are missing field goals, are blocking poorly on short yardage runs, are purposely playing linebacker poorly, etc. -- because of some conscious or subconscious disrespect for their QB?! Denying themselves all of their career goals and life's aspirations in the process... Again, if you can see Andy Reid as unable to see the obvious, pretend you're seeing him when you look in your own mirror.

Here is my biggest worry everyone-> First off, I don't think Lurie will actually fire Reid. Reid will resign saying he wants to spend more time with his family or something like that - Lurie will let him go gracefully. Next, I bet dollars to donuts that instead of bringing in a Cowher, Gruden, or Fisher, that the Eagles will just make Morningweg the head coach. This is the way they do these types of things. This is now my biggest concern about the team.

They're all junior McNabbs. He prissied around, trying to keep from getting injured (that would have interfered with his businesses and his tv celebrity show). And Andy Reid let McNabb act like a prima donna. The culture of the team isn't to work hard and get down and dirty, it's to try to look like divas on the field, and get paid as much as possible. I blame Reid and how he handled that overrated jerk McNabb.

The Eagles are an excellent team, including the o-line, and kicker.
Simple formula to salvage season and maybe even win the big one:
    1) FIRE JUAN CASTILLO NOW!! He seems like a really swell guy, but he is lost, unable to make half-time or 4th quarter adjustments.
2)Give a team any friggin player they want and obtain one good linebacker.

Wide receivers - midgets. QB - midget. Linebackers - midgets. Coaches -mental midgets. You cannot win in the NFL with midgets. Here was the eagles' misguided strategy. We have such a high power offense that we'll score at will, other teams will have to play catch-up and with our high $$$ pass rush and high $$$ defensive backs, the other teams will have to throw to catch up so it doesn't matter if we cannot defend the run. My has that worked well.

Let's be candid. This is the worst coached team in the league. The players give a half hearted effort and are paid millions. Gut check? How about just cancelling their checks including Reid's. What an embarassment they are to the city. Nice job Joe! But, don't worry, people will continue to pay $7.50 for a beer. The same fans you 'care so dearly about'. You should start by giving everyone a refund back on their tickets if they want them. Who would want to watch this debacle? The only 'green' you are interested in is that coming out of the fan's pockets.

Okay Phil. Was I right when I told you all tese things were going to happen. By the way, how many points did Vick score in the second half. It's the second coming of McNabb who was gteat duting the game and lousy at the end of important games adn this was a life or death game. Kolb is the quarterbach he could have been here, and the Eagles have a better team, believe it or not. Firing Sean got Reid blackballed by defense coaches. So Reid went and spent the Eagles money like water to make sure he went to the superbowl and not look like a fool for his stupid decisions. This only proved he is a fool in a perfect way. This is the best example of poetic justice that I have seen in a long time. I think you are beginning to understand now. Banner will never understand and has to go so Lurie can fire Reid.

Don't know how you can call them the "lowly" 49ers, when the Eagles are pretty low themselves and unwatchable right now.
I said this last week that it is time for Reid to go. Thirteen years has been enough for this guy to "do a better job there" when the ultimate goal has not been attained. They are extremely soft in all areas, and can't all of a sudden keep a lead anymore.
    Time for Andy to go.

Move to boston, or as we call it title town. We had sox fold so we could focus on raising the Stanley cup banner (nice sweep over Philly!). Boston has done it all in the past 10 years. Eagles could have won many super bowls with a real QB. Cunningham, McNabb, and El Perro all are lacking in processing power

I am in full agreement with firing Juan, Marty, Andy, Howie, Banner, Mudd, Washburn, and the list goes on.... Is there any real chance of any of these happening this season? How about hiring Gruden, Fisher, Cowher to just do an audit so that Lurie can actually get an opinion that he might trust. What of we get to 1 and 6? 1 and 8? Will there really be a tipping point ever, or will big red just give us the lame o we are rebuilding (which we all knew was happening) I'v got no problem with the kicker missing today. It happens. We all forget that clutch kick he made before the half just a week ago.

Perfect storm ... overpaid Nnamdi (never pay top dollar for anyone from a terrible team - see Brand, Elton), let Akers walk, first and second round picks can't get on the field, defensive coordinator with no experience, no linebackers or safeties ... looks like the the Big Guy can't draft, can't hire coordinators (two duds in a row on D) and can't keep get his $100M quarterback from getting killed by a swiss cheese o-line. But will Jeffy and Joey "Nickels" pull the trigger and pay him a ton of money to sit home? Don't count on it.

This isn't all bad, people. Eagles are 1-3. Cardinals are 1-3. Eagles have Card's second round pick next year. That could be 3 picks in the first 40. Imagine what they could do with that. Just have to get someone who knows how to draft before April 2012.

I just love the "fire Andy Reid comments." Wasn't that long ago when everyone thought he was great for taking Vick on and SB was written on everyones eyeballs when you looked at them and all I wanted to do was crawl under the bed and pretend I was 8 years old again but I decided to put on my big boy pants and get behind my team but not Vick. I refuse to get behind Vick cause I was well aware of how he plays.

Simply put. How many guys on that team that play their position outstanding or
above average or above mediocre have 100 mil contract?

Reid's miscalculation that the after game press conference is he versus the media is utterly stupid. His presser is his opportunity to address the fans. It sucks to lose, I know he doesnt want to be in this situation. As fan, $65 ticket, $25 parking, $7 beers $4 bottle water, countless dollars on gear, leaving the wife an kids home and dealing with the dog house issues.... his miserable press conference mantra is so far over jumping the shark. Fire Andy... right now... forget the reasons, just on gut feeling that now is the right time. He deserves nothing. HE takes no consideration of the average fan.

You all can crow about the team and Reid. Yes Reid promoted Juan so he should be held accountable. The offence dispite the red zone issue's didn't lose this game. The defence has collapsed in all 3 loses. Juna should be fired I agree with Reid to follow at the end of the year.

Andy Reid is past his effective expiration date. His usefulness to this team and city has long been over. And the best message this ownership can send to their fans, and ticket holders is to get rid of him.

While they are technically in playoff contention, there is no doubt that this team is without motivation, inspiration, education or leadership.

I pay an ENORMOUS amount of money for my tickets. I then pay an ENORMOUS amount of money for food and drink at the stadium. I want to know that there is a professional management team in place to give me at least the POSSIBILITY of enjoying myself once I get there.

    This is not the case.

I knew at the half today that they would lose this game. It was clear their heads were not in it, and that it was only a matter of time before they succumb to the mediocrity that is the Reid era.

The stadium today was as empty as I've seen it in the Reid era. Barely 2/3 full. This wasn't due to the rain, the cold or the fact that there's a Phillies game tonight. It's because this team has no soul, and that stems from the head coach, who has no heart, no mind for the game and no self awareness at all.

There is no defending this guy, and absolutely no reason to keep him. The best thing we can do is make a clean break, and get on with the rest of our lives.

If the Phillies win another World Series that might make the Eagles irrelevant enough and embarrass Lurie enough to make a change. Otherwise, he has your money as long as Reid and the Eagles win just enough to keep the fans coming back, if only just to boo Andy!

If they lose at Buffalo and Redskins (looking like a depressing possibility), all fans MUST stay home from the Dallas game. A complete and total boycott. Having the Linc as a virtual ghost town on national TV would send a powerful message to ownership.

The more I think about it, Lurie firing Reid is looking less and less likely now, and I think we're stuck with those guys right to the end of the season. IF...big IF...Lurie finally had enough of Reid's antics and cut him loose, he has no one to replace him with on that staff. Cowher, Gruden and others will want their own team, and I can't see anyone being kept from that motley collection of Reid's. It would mean building a new staff from scratch very fast; a new system that even veteran players would have trouble learning, and highly unlikely that it would manifest quickly enough to salvage the season.

I think if Lurie does get fed up (and I've said his whole thing is about making money, not winning SB's), he'll wait til the end of the season, and can everyone. Then it will be a new coach, new staff, new everything who will sort out the mess Andy made. For now, we have a "Dream Team" that will be lucky to reach .500. Very sad, but the bed has been made and EagleFan must lie in it.

And even if Andy and the gang left tomorrow, we're still stuck with that midget China doll Vick for the rest of the decade. Why oh why would you throw all those years and all that money at a guy who should be a running back rather than a QB? I suppose Luray and company are gonna once again show the world how we were so wrong about Dogkiller and they knew so much more than us dummies.

Miami could push the Eagles for that worst home record going back to last year.

It's been discussed all week on the Eagles forums about how bad the drafting record of the Eagles has been in the last several years. The free agent spending spree was little more than a mask to cover what was assumed to be the Eagles' problems, yet the same problems remain while new ones continue to rear their heads.

    Poor drafting.

    An amazing lack of discipline.

    Disorganization and disinterest.

Lack of basic fundamentals such as tackling and gaining 1 yard.

Poor coaching from the top down.

It's time for an organizational housecleaning.

There is only thing that I disagree with in this article. It is when you stated that our defense was one of the worst in the league. Do some research....our defense is one the best in the league; our offense has been conservative all year and almost sickening at times. You know, Eagles fans, history has to repeat itself. Remember 1994? THat was the year that the 49ers won the superbowl..you know what lost started our season to go in a positive direction? It was a 40 to 8 lost to the Eagles. Good luck...season is still young.

This is just utterly disgusting. I feel like the season is over and there is nothing left to play for. I mean i feel like I can't even enjoy watching any more games. It's like it's February after the super bowl. There is no more football. I have not felt like this about the Eagles since the Kotite years. I have that empty feeling like when we lost Jerome Brown. Yes the early to middle Reid years were exciting and there was always this expectation that one more tweak here or there and we were going to finally win a super bowl. Well I think that ship has sailed definitely for this year. In fact I don't think it will ever happen with Reid at the Helm. It's time to fire the coach. I don't think I can watch another Eagles game until that happens. I cannot stomach more poor play calling, clock mis-management, unnecessary time outs, bad challenges, no challenges, lack of game day preparations, poor game time adjustments, just flat out dumb decisions and simply being out coached. Then at the press conference having the guts to say over and over, "I goofed I have to get better at that". Did you ever hear of anything like that from Tom Landry, Chuck Knoll? How can the team play well if the coach is always goofing every week. It's time and there are too many good coaches waiting in the wings.

What an incredibly misleading article. I question the intent and motivation of the author in this one, perhaps he is sick of writing about the Eagles?

Anyway, the Vick interception was on DeSean. He coughed up the pass which landed in the defensive players hands. Vick pulled out his Hercules act today and got the job done putting the Eagles in scoring position several times but the other guys on the team failing on three of them (the Ronnie Brown mess up and two missed field goals from Henery).

1-3 is not pretty, but two wins in a row will bring them back to even.

1-6 in their last seven. What a dumb star considering you count this seasons 3, the Week 17 meaningless game from last year and what not. What are you trying to do with a stat like that?

Reid certainly has his cast of clowns: Castillo & Mornhinweg. The Asomugha signing is also puzzling--given team had already secured services of DRC. Making the Asomugha deal was a "vanity play" by the Eagles proving what? Big talent FAs wanted to come to Philly? 12 more games left in 2012--what else can happen?

    Here's two thoughts:
1.Draft day 2012, pack Andy a lunch and give hime a free pass to the zoo. As chief honcho in the war room he has his top four choices from 2011 who cannot make it on the field. He has missed on every early pick he has ever made for his D-line and his only first day pick at LB is trying to make it on the West coast. His only hits in recent years have been the on offense. Andy outsmarts himself. He thinks he genius.

    2. He'll never admit it but his defense became toothless when he let Brian Dawkins walk. He's been trying to find a safety and defensive with attitude ever since.

Andy's an idiot who will never win a SB.

Just a quick note to everyone calling for Reid's head today: it won't happen. NFL coaches are VERY rarely fired mid-season. We all have to endure this entire abomination of a season before we get to kiss Reid's fat rear goodbye. And that's only if Jeff has the stones, which he doesn't. Expect to see Reid at the helm next year too.
