One domino down

The Giants deal for Carlos Beltran puts pressure on the Phillies and will change the complexion of the rest of the 2011 season. And postseason.

Carlos Beltran is moving straight up to the defending champs, not the NL runners-up.

Should the Phillies trade Domonic Brown for a veteran righthanded hitter?
Yes.
No.

If it goes through, this Carlos Beltran-to-the-Giants trade is going to change the complexion of the rest of the 2011 season and postseason.

Last week, you may recall, I wrote a column saying the Phillies should part with some of their future in order to obtain Beltran. That’s just what the defending champion Giants reportedly did, trading away 21-year-old pitching prospect Zack Wheeler. Wheeler is five days younger than the Phillies’ prized Jarred Cosart, as well as more highly rated by Baseball America. (Beltran has a no-trade clause but is expected to approve the deal.)

The trade raises the temperature on Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. to do something before Sunday’s deadline. It also blasts holes in two of the rationales that were floating around for the last week.

Many media types and readers argued the Phillies shouldn’t help the Mets for the long term by taking on free-agent-to-be Beltran as a three-month rental. Well, now the Mets have Wheeler, who has every bit as much chance as developing into a legitimate ace as Cosart. And the Giants – the team that eliminated the offensively challenged Phillies in the NLCS last October – would be a much more balanced team.

Last year, the Giants chose not to make a major move, adding only the released Cody Ross and a couple of middle relievers around the trade deadline. That has been used to support the idea the Phillies don’t really need to do much. Well, that logic looks a little wobbly now that those very same Giants, looking to repeat as World Series champs, have won the Beltran sweepstakes.

Everyone agrees the Phillies are good enough to reach the postseason for the fifth straight year. The issue is whether they’ve learned from two consecutive years of being eliminated because their always streaky lineup goes ice-cold against bigtime pitching. Standing pat now won’t cost the Phillies the NL East title. But it may haunt them in a series against the Giants or Braves or Red Sox or Yankees.

There’s no shame in losing the NLCS or the World Series. But it would be a shame not to address an easily predicted problem now, when there are some options.

If it’s Game 6 of the NLCS and Domonic Brown drives in the winning run while Beltran struggles against the Phillies’ pitching staff, then standing pat will look brilliant. But if Beltran is part of a mob of Giants celebrating on the field at the Bank this October, this is the week that made that possible.

Whatever happens, it makes for a fascinating storyline.

Of course, Amaro can still add to the cast of characters this week.

Kind of expected the Braves to pick up Beltran with McCann going down for who knows how long. Not surprised Beltran didn't go to the Phightins though. better move to pry Pence if possible than go for the rental...otherwise all the other RH hitters look to me as pretty much the same as what we got

Tough spot for Ruby.....I don't see how you can give up on a guy like Dom Brown. I agree it's a "win now" mentality, but he has such an upside. I am thinking they may make a few minor moves, but no big blockbuster trade that would involve Dom Brown or Vance Worley.

theres no "temperature raising" on amaro to get anything done despite what phulofs.hit sheridan says. this team has the best record in baseball. no panic moves to trade away the farm are necessary. the only player out there worth making a move is the twins' cuddyer. it is really annoying how some so-called writers on this site contrive stories just to keep you clicking on links to earn philly.com some ad revenue.

Just play Mayberry against the youngsters and we are good. Trade 1- A level prospect & 2 B level prospects to the Marlins for Omar Infante & Leo Nunez!! 3rd Base is a need. Polonco has a bulging disc in his back and hasn't been good since April... Ibanez is streaking hot, comfortable with Victorino, & comfortabe with Dom Brown Mayberrry platoon.

Amaro doesn't seem to know how to fill holes --he only knows how to make a splash when trading for sure-fire aces -- Gillick knew how to solve issues like getting bench and bullpen pieces and balancing lineup --indeed everyone was clamoring for Amaro to get right handed bat all winter -- could jave signed guys like Francouer or Melky Cabrera then without having to give up prospects --just like he could have kept Lee before 2010 and then wouldn't have had to give up prospects for Owsald (propsects that could havv been sued to fill other needed holes instead)...fans that have faither in Amaro will continue to be disappointed in the empty suit

Reports have Ruben offering Singleton, Cosart and a "B" level pitcher for Pence but was turned down by Ed. Ruben can sweeten the offer for Pence by throwing in Brownie and an additional baby "ACE". Tough break for Susdorf going on the DL in AA on Monday but he is a better all around lefthanded hitting outfielder but with less power than Brownie anyway. He was just short of qualifying for the Eastern League batting lead with a .339 average before going on the DL. Sus will make a nice replacement in left for Raul when he retires.

Dull, you're a doofus. Susdorf is not even a big league prospect, much less a prospect who has a chance to be better than Brown.

Phillies are not going to make a big move this year. They do not need to. If they can not win with what they have now they will never win. This team is much better overall then the 2008 and 2009 teams and is still the best team in baseball right now even better then the Giants with Beltron. The Phillies have the best shot to win it all this year without trading away any part of the future as the Giants just did. No harm in considering options and offers, but the phillioes should not feel any presure. We are the ones with all the cards FIVE ACES that is.
