Washington Twp. vs. Lenape scrimmage recap

Washington Township visited Lenape for a "game scrimmage" in football early Thursday night.

Some takeaways:

-- It was a good night for Lenape. The teams only went a half with their varsity players and the Indians built a 28-0 lead.

-- Lenape junior RB Jake Topolski scored the first TD on a 12-yard run on a counter. Good blocking on the play, and hard running by Topolski.

-- Lenape junior QB Matt Lajoie played well. He ran 10 yards for a TD and also threw a scoring pass of around 40 yards to senior TE Ryan Cassidy.

-- Lenape's fourth TD came on a remarkable special-teams play by senior DB Mike Doulong. Rushing from the right side, Doulong blocked a field goal attempt, scooped up the football and raced about 60 yards for a TD. It was a terrific football play.

-- Lenape senior kicker Ben Harris had a good night. He was 4-for-4 on PATS and boomed a few deep kickoffs.

-- Lenape coach Tim McAneney is a football coach. He knew his team was ahead 28-0 after one half. He was more concerned about the tackling of his first string -- "We had to do better than that," he said -- and the execution of his J.V. players.

-- Washington Township coach Mark Wechter: "We had a bad night. Offense, defense, special teams. We needed it. We saw it coming, with the week we had in practice."

-- Washington Township junior RB Akennis Yates made a couple of big plays. He showed burst, vision and nice knack for cutbacks.

-- Washington Township senior QB Mike Piperno made a couple of nice throws, including a 15-yard strike on a fourth-and-14. Piperno was under a lot of pass-rush pressure, and took a couple of sacks for major lossed yardage. "We've been playing well," Piperno said of the Minutemen this summer. "We just had a bad night tonight. We'll be OK."

-- Washington Township was without its top lineman as senior Dave Grosmick sat out with an ankle sprain. Grosmick said after the scrimmage that he should be OK for the season opener.

-- Washington Township's J.V. played well.

-- Looking ahead: Lenape opens Sept. 9 at home vs. WJFL Capitol division rival Trenton while Washington Township opens the same night at home vs. WJFL American division foe Hammonton.
