Football: Baker's dozen of games to watch this weekend

The South Jersey football regular season has passed the halfway point as teams prepare for Week 6 and division and playoff races narrow into sharper focus.

Here's a look at baker's dozen games of note this weekend:

Friday (All games at 7 except St. Augustine at Holy Spirit at 6)

No. 1 St. Augustine (5-0) at No. 8 Holy Spirit (5-0): This is a renewal of an old rivalry from the Cape-Atlantic League, with high stakes for both teams in the new and expanded West Jersey Football League. There should be a huge cowd at Ed Byrnes Stadium for this game. The Prep has been averaging 46.2 points with an explosive offense led by junior QB Josh Zamot and junior RB Kyle Dobbins along with senior all-purpose Zeke Ennis. Holy Spirit's defense has been stout and the Spartans' ground game has hit another gear in recent weeks. Senior RB Reggie Jean-Charles is coming off a monster game vs. Pleasantville -- 284 yards, 6 TDs. Another interesting aspect to this game: SA coach Mark Reardon and his top assistant, Chalie Roman, are HS graduates. Roman was HS's highly successful head coach before joining Reardon at SA prior to the 2012 season.

No. 19 Burlington Twp. (4-1) at Ewing (4-1): The Falcons are known for their explosive offense with playmakers such as senior QB Bryan Pettway and senior RB Drew Price. They also are hoping for the return of senior all-purpose Everett Wormley, a Rutgers recruit who has been out the last three weeks with an abdominal muscle strain. But BT also has played strong defense, with three shutouts. The Falcons have outscored their last two opponents by 75-0. Ewing has a big win over Pemberton. This would be a big power-point win for BT given Ewing's four victories.

No. 11 Camden (2-2) at No. 2 Timber Creek (4-0): The visiting Panthers are unbeaten in regulation. Their two losses were in overtime to undefeated teams -- 22-15 to 4-0 Camden Catholic and 28-22 to 5-0 CH West. Camden senior QB Drew Harris and junior RB Najyere Edwards have been big-playmakers for the Panthers. TC has been led by the combination of junior QB Devin Leary (17 TD passes) and senior WR Ezrah Archie (9 TD catches) along with a sturdy offensive line and solid defense. TC coach Rob Hinson is a Camden graduate.

No. 5 Shawnee (4-0) at No. 7 Camden Catholic (4-0): This gets the nod for GOTW. CC coach Nick Strom talked the other day of the respect and admiration he has for veteran Shawnee coach Tim Gushue and his staff. Strom said he sent Gushue an email after watching Shawnee stun Timber Creek in the SJ 4 title game in 2013, calling it a "masterpiece" of coaching. Shawnee is undefeated but living a little dangerously, according to Gushue: "We've been our own worst enemy." Senior RB/LBs Dan Wigley and Jax Luzinski are players to watch for Shawnee. CC seniors Nazir Streater and Tyler Romano lead a young team with several sophomores and a couple freshmen in key positions.

No. 15 Cinnaminson (5-0) at Collingswood (3-1): This is one of the new crossover games in the WJFL, matching a traditional Colonial Conference team with a Burlington County team. "We like it," Collingswood coach Jack McConnell said. "It's new. It's fresh." Collingswood has rallied from a tough loss to Haddonfield on opening night with three straight victories, the last two by shutout. Cinnaminson has won every game by at least 22 points. This game offers an interesting matchup of senior all-purpose QBs in Collingswood's Javon Allie and Cinnaminson's Shaun Davilla.

Woodbury (2-2) at Clayton (3-1): Historic Haupt Field in Clayton will host a matchup between old, small-school Gloucester County programs that haven't played for years. Both teams are angling for berths in the SJ 1 tournament so there's more than just bragging rights on the line.

Vineland (4-0) at No. 23 Clearview (3-1): Raise your hand if you saw this as a key Week 6 game. Didn't think so. Vineland has been one of the surprise teams of the first half of the season. The Clan is coming off a bye and would take a major step toward a SJ 5 playoff berth with a victory. Clearview struggled in a loss to Timber Creek but otherwise has been impressive, scoring 36, 49 and 41 points in its three victories with slick senior QB Jarret Baker orchestrating the Pioneers' triple-option offense. Given Vineland's record and Group 5 status, Clearview can rack up major power points in its quest for a high seed in the SJ 4 tournament with a win.

No. 22 Delsea (2-3) at Kingsway (0-4): These are old rivals from the Tri-County Royal Division. Delsea is digging out from a 1-3 start -- courtesy of a demanding schedule that includes crossover games with No. 13 Cedar Creek and No. 8 Holy Spirit -- and can ill-afford another slip if the Crusaders hope to defend the SJ 3 title they've won four years in a row. It might seem like faint praise to say Kingsway is better than its record but it's true: The Dragons went toe-to-toe with No. 5 Shawnee in a 28-12 loss last weekend. New coach Mark Hendricks is going to gert his first victory one of these weeks.

Deptford (3-1) at Schalick (4-0): The host Cougars have won seven in a row since starting last season with an 0-7 record. They've also pitched three straight shutouts. Senior QB Jared Fox has directed a versatile offensive attack. Deptford has a top QB in senior Riley Giles and a junior RB to watch in Darius Dowd.

No. 17 Millville (3-1) at No. 16 Hammonton (3-2): This a crossover game between old CAL rivals. Millville junior QB Marcial Ramos is a player to watch. Hammonton will look to bounce back from a tough loss to Cherokee last weekend. Senior all-purpose Victor Solis-Mays have been a playmaker for the Blue Devils.

No. 21 Woodrow Wilson (3-1) at Willingboro (3-2): Both teams have won three in a row after slow starts. Senior DB/WR Edwin Lopez is a player to watch for the visiting Tigers. He returned a punt for a TD on Saturday vs. Moorestown. Willingboro is riding high coming off a 37-0 win over Holy Cross. Junior WR David Green caught two TD passes in that big win.

Woodstown (3-1) at No. 4 West Deptford (4-0): The schedule-makers probably figured this was natural crossover of SJ 2 teams but Woodstown has dropped to SJ 1 this season. The Wolverines have rallied from a loss to Pennsville in the opener with three straight victories, including an impressive 20-0 victory over Overbrook. WD has been rolling with a deep and explosive backfield led by seniors Anthony Seas and Gio Gismondi. The return of senior RB Quran Dozier last week only added to the arsenal. WD can't get caught looking ahead to next week's showdown with archrival Haddonfield.

Saturday

No. 14 Haddonfield (4-0) at Paulsboro (3-1), 2 o'clock: The Bulldawgs are entering the teeth of their regular-season schedules games against Paulsboro, West Deptford and Cedar Creek the next three weekends. Haddonfield has gotten strong work from senior RB Justin Gallo among others. Senior QB/DE Brendan Gilmartin is a key guy on both sides of the football for the Bulldawgs. He has been hampered a bit with a knee injury. Paulsboro has rallied from a one-point, season-opening loss to Woodbury with three straight wins. Senior QB Kyle Jones and junior RB Dehron Holloway have led the way.
