Football: A dozen games to watch this weekend

Here are 12 games to watch this weekend in South Jersey football:

Friday (All games at 7)

No. 12 Camden Catholic (1-0) at Bishop Eustace (1-0): The Irish are coming off a drama tic OT win over Camden. The Crusaders played their typically tough defense in an season-opening win over Triton. These teams are old rivals but this is a cross-over game this season as Camden Catholic has moved up to the WJFL Constitution Division.

No. 14 Burlington Twp. (1-0) at Paul VI (1-0): Both teams lit up the scoreboard in their opener. BT got three TDs passes from senior QB Bryan Pettway in a big win over Notre Dame. The Falcons also have playmakers to watch in senior all-purpose Everett Wormley and senior RB Drew Price. PVI rolled to a 41-0 win over CH East in the first game under new coach Phil Brunozzi. Senior RB Jay Jay Vaughters, a CHE transfer, had a big game in his PVI debut.

No. 2 Timber Creek (1-0) at No. 9 Cherokee (0-1): The Chargers are riding high after putting 54 on the board in the opener against then-No. 5 Delsea. Junior QB Devin Leary threw six TD passes, five in the first half. Cherokee will look to bounce back from a stunning loss to Shawnee in the opener. The Chiefs are a veteran squad with accomplished athletes such as Rutgers-bound RB/DB John Lovett. They likely will play with an urgency bordering on desperation to avoid an 0-2 start to a season of high expectations.

No. 21 Highland (1-0) at No. 17 Cherry Hill West (1-0): The Tartans are riding high after scoring a 13-7 win over Woodrow Wilson. Seniors such as RB Orlando Council, two-way lineman Mike Lovenduski and two-way end Joe Tripoli led the way. CHW also is coming off a tight win. The Lions beat Seneca 15-13 with senior all-purpose Harrison Hand showing the way with big plays on both sides of the football. Both are these teams are in SJ 4, so there's major playoff implications in this game as well.

Florence (1-0) at Clayton (1-0): Two Group 1 teams meet in one of those rare matchups created by the WJFL crossover schedule. Clayton made the SJ 1 finals last year and opened this season with a bang with a big win over Gloucester. Florence edged rival Burlington City in the opener and now seeks veteran coach Joe Frappolli's 295 career win.

No. 1 St. Augustine (2-0) at No. 11 Williamstown (1-0): Lots of subplots to this one. SA junior RB Kyle Dobbins, one of SJ's top players, is a Monroe Twp. kid who would have attended Williamstown if he went to a public school. Braves coach Frank Fucetola started his career at St. Augustine. The Braves are coming off an impressive win over Kingsway in the opener as sophomore QB J.C. Collins threw four TD passes, all to senior WR Vic Ruggiano. SA has put 40-plus on the board in ots first two games. Dobbins, junior QB Josh Zamot and senior all-purpose Zeke Ennis are explosive playmakers.

Deptford (1-0) at Gateway (1-0): These two schools are a long pass away from each other but haven't played in years with Gateway in the Colonial Conference. With the Gators in the WJFL, this matchup was created as an interesting cross-over. These kids know each other and that should lead to an spirited battle. Plus, one of these clubs is walking away with a 2-0 record and that's a big incentive.

No. 18 Rancocas Valley (1-0) at No. 8 Hammonton (1-0): The Red Devils opened with a big win over Hopewell Valley, as Rob Hawkins scored three TDs and Iverson Clement scored two. The Blue Devils beat Washington Township but have to be concerned about the status of senior dual-threat QB Malachi Winters, who injured his shoulder in the opener. Coach Jim Raso said Winters is "day-to-day."

Saturday

No. 19 Pennsville (1-0) at Woodbury (1-0), 10:30: Still another interesting cross-over game in the new WJFL. The Eagles are the defending SJ 1 champions. They are coming off a nice win over rival Woodstown in the opener. Woodbury is riding high after beating arch-rival Paulsboro in the opener. Lots of SJ 1 playoff implications in this one.

No. 22 Holy Spirit (1-0) at No. 3 St. Joseph (2-0), noon: These squads are old and fierce rivals from the Cape-Atlantic League. SJ is coming off an emotional win as veteran coach Paul Sacco earned his 300th career victory. The Wildcats have a top player to watch in junior FB/LB Qwahsin Townsel. Holy Spirit handled Middle Twp. in its opener. These teams could meet again in the NP 2 state tournament.

Triton (0-1) at Pennsauken (1-0), noon: These teams have history and traditionally have staged fierce, physical battles. Triton went toe-to-toe with Bishop Eustace in the opener. Pennsauken is coming off a big win over Winslow Twp. The Indians got great work from senior RB Martin Booker Jr., who ran for 254 and caught passes for 45 and scored 3 TDs.

No. 10 Delsea (0-1) at No. 4 Cedar Creek (1-0), 1: This game matches the defending SJ 3 champion Crusaders vs. the defending SJ 2 champion Pirates. It's also part of the challenging cross-over slate the new and expanded WJFL created for Cedar Creek. The Pirates are coming off an imposing win over Absegami in the opener, with senior QB Jesse Milza throwing four TD passes. Delsea will look to bounce back from a tough loss to Timber Creek in the opener. The Crusaders' defense will face a similar challenge from a team that likes to spread the field and features a veteran QB and big-play athletes.
