Basketball: Wildwood Catholic falls to Phelps (Md.)

Wildwood Catholic coach David DeWeese was happy about everything except the outcome.

"I thought we controlled the game," DeWeese said of Wildwood Catholic's 58-51 loss to highly-touted Phelps of Maryland at the American Basketball Classic Saturday at St. Augustine Prep.

Jordan Robertson scored 17 and Eddie McWade added 15 for Wildwood Catholic (5-3).

The Crusaders were undone by an uncharactistically poor performance from the foul line.

"We just couldn't hit a foul shot," DeWeese said. "I don't think many people thought we had a chance against this team but I was very happy with how we played. We just couldn't put the ball in the basket from the foul line."

Phelps, a program that includes fifth-year seniors, was led by 6-8 Terry Larrier, a Virginia Commonwealth recruit.

Wildwood Catholic's three losses have been to No. 2 Atlantic City, Philadelphia Catholic League program La Salle and Phelps.

"We want to be battled tested," DeWeese said. "The past couple years, we got a home game in the Cape-Atlantic League tournament and we've lost.

"We want to play these tougher games and hopefully it will get us ready for the league tournament and also the state tournament."
