Baseball: Games to watch this week

By Phil Anastasia

Here are some games to watch this week:

Monday

Haddon Township (3-1) at Sterling (2-0) at 4: This should be an intense Colonial Conference inter-division clash. HT coming off win of Rohrer Tournament, led by MVP Tyler Easterday. Sterling off to strong start with wins over Haddonfield and Haddon Heights.

Washington Twp. (3-0 entering Sunday night vs. Don Bosco Prep at Diamond Nation) at Eastern (4-0), 3;45; The Vikings went 4-0 and didn't allow a run on trip South, including a no-hitter with 14 Ks by Alex Bussison. RHP Steve Priolo should get ball against WT, defending Olympic American champs.

GCIT (1-2) at Delsea (2-0), 4: The Cheetahs hope to avoid 1-3 start in key TriCo Royal clash. Delsea's pitching has been strong and Crusaders hope to have junior right-hander Bryan Dobzanski (shoulder soreness) back by end of the month.

Tuesday

Holy Cross (2-1) at Delran (2-2) at 3:30: These cross-town rivals almost always cook up a good game.

Burlington Twp. (1-2) at Rancocas Valley (3-0) at 3:45: BT won the Burlco Liberty last year thanks to a sweep of RV. Red Devils looking to turn tables this season.

Wednesday

BE (3-0 entering Ralph Shaw final Sunday at 3) at Eastern (4-0) at 3:45: BE junior lefty Devin Smeltzer, who shut down Camden Catholic on Saturday, probably won't be rested enough to face his old team. He transferred to BE after freshmen year at Eastern.

CC (2-2 entering Shaw consolation Sunday at noon) at Cherokee, 3:45: The Irish's potent lineup against the Chiefs' strong pitching staff.

Hammonton (3-0) at St. Augustine (2-0) at 4: This Cape-Atlantic American battle could match ace right-handers in the Blue Devils' Justin Smith and the Hermits' Chris Oakley, a North Carolina recruit.

Thursday

Cinnaminson (4-1) at Rancocas Valley (3-0), Thursday at 3:45: The Pirates have scored a South Jersey-best 76 runs. That's an average of 15.2 in first five games. RV might have SJ's best hitter in senior catcher Nick Cieri, a Maryland recruit.

Lenape (3-0) at Washington Twp. (3-0) at 4: The Indians' pitching was strong on Southern trip. This is a key Olympic American clash.

Friday

Shawnee (3-1) at Cherokee (3-1) at 3:45: This traditional rivalry game gets a boost of importance as these teams now as division rivals with Shawnee moving into the Olympic American this season.

Saturday

Cherokee (3-1) at Washington Township (3-0), Saturday at 2: These Olympic American and South Jersey Group 4 rivals meet in the title game of the Grand Slam Classic. They could play four times this season if they meet in SJ 4 action.
