Basketball: Camden beats Bishop Eustace

By Phil Anastasia

Junior guard Tavaris Headen scored 20 points, including 5 in the final 8 seconds of the third quarter, to lead Camden to a 54-48 victory over Bishop Eustace on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior center Amir Maddred addd  13 points and 8 rebounds and freshman forward Jamal Holloway grabbed 10 rebounds for Camden (9-6, 3-2 in the Olympic National).

Headen, a 5-8 lefthander, made a three-pointer with 0:08 on the clock in the third quarter, lifted a steal and converted a layup at the buzzer. The sequence sent Camden into the fourth quarter with a 42-34 lead.

"He's our most consistent player," Camden coach Cetsh Byrd said of Headen.

The victory was big for Camden both in the Olympic National race and also in the jostling for a SJ Group 3 playoff berth. The Panthers will receive a lot of power points for beating a BE team that entered with a 11-3 record.

Junior guard Dvonne Trumbo scored 14, senior guard Tom Falconiero scored 12 and junior guard Flo DaSilva generated 8 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for BE (11-4, 4-2).

"We didn't have as much energy as we normally have," BE coach Bob Falconiero said. "You're going to have games like that but you can't hae them against Camden High."
