Girls' soccer: Eastern beats Lenape
Junior Maxine Turchin recorded the first goal to set off a scoring run for Eastern as the Vikings beat Lenape 3-0 Monday in a clash of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in The Inquirer girls' soccer Top 10.
Turchin, a junior midfielder, scored on a half-serve, half-shot from about 30 yardfs away with 17:16 remaining in the first half.
"I couldn't believe it went in," Turchin said.
It started an Eastern surge that included goals by freshman Jaelyn Thompson of a nice feed from senior Jamee Simone and junior midfielder Cristina Padovani.
All three goals came in a stretch of 2:38 seconds.
"Other than that, it was a pretty even game," Eastern coach Jamie McGroarty said.
Eastern, the No. 1 team in the rankings, improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Olympic American.
Lenape, the five-time defending state Group 4 and SJ coaches tournament champions, fell to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the division.
"We need to work to improve and hopefully we'll see them again in the coaches tournament and the playoffs," Lenape coach Kevin Meder said.
