Baseball: Tri-Cape beats Olympic Colonial in Carpenter Cup

Salem junior Troy Sieber was 3-for-3 with three doubles as part of a 21-hit attack as Tri-Cape beat Olympic Colonial 18-3 on Monday morning in the first round of the Carpenter Cup baseball tournament.

Andrew Ordille of St. Joseph of Hammonton was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs and Ellliott McCummings of Gloucester Catholic was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as Tri-Cape advanced to face Surburban One American/Continental in the second round Thursday.

Tri-Cape pitchers shut down Olympic Colonial, allowing just seven hits in the game at Ashburn Field in FDR Park.

Relievers Beau Hall (Ocean City), Joe Santone (Gloucester Catholic), Brett Kennedy (Atlantic City) and Justin Smith combined to pitch five hitless innings from the third through the seventh.

Every starter in the Tri-Cape lineup had a hit except Gloucester Catholic's Brett Tenuto, but he drove in a pair of runs and also scored a run.

The Tri-Cape reserves took the field in the fifth and raised the bar, smashing six extra-base hits, led by Sieber's three doubles -- all three of which were to left-center field.'

"I've been working on driving the ball the other way," said Sieber, a left-handed swinger.

Millville's Andrew Biggs pitched the ninth, striking out two.

"It was wonderful watching all those hits," Biggs said of his teammates.
