Mike Elfreth had two hits, scored two runs and pitched two scoreless innings of relief to lead St. Augustine Prep to a 4-3 victory over previously unbeaten Buena on Tuesday.
Elfreth was in the middle of the Hermits' two-run rally to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Elfreth also delivered a single and scored the eventual winning run in the top of the ninth.
Jay Higbee had a two-out, two-run single for SAP (4-3) in the top of the seventh.
Buena (5-1) scored three in the first, with a big hit a two-run doubles by Anthony Lopez.
Buena pitcher Justin Geri worked seven innings, allowing three runs -- just one earned -- on three hits.
SAP scored the winning run on an infield single by Kyle Lindsay.
"We needed this one bad," said SAP coach Mike Bylone, whose team had lost three of its last four.
Elfreth faced just six batters in the eighth and ninth. He allowed a single in the eighth but the Hermits turned a doulbe play. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two.
"I wasn't letting this one get by me unless my arm fell off," Elfreth said.
