Football: Kemp Carr out at Penns Grove

Kemp Carr has been relieved of his duties as Penns Grove's football coach.

School superintendent Joseph Massare said Tuesday morning that Carr has been "suspended with pay," pending an investigation into a possible violation of the student code involving a Penns Grove player.

Carr also has been suspended with pay from his position as a physical education teacher.

Massare said the Penns Grove board of education will hold a hearing on Carr's status on Monday.

Penns Grove (6-3) is the No. 5 seed in the South Jersey Group 1 tournament. The Red Devils play at No. 1 seed Pennsville (9-0) on Friday night.

Massare said assistant coach John Emel will serve as the team's head coach on an interim basis.

Massare said Carr's status as the school's head basketball coach is "still to be determined."

Penns Grove is coming off a 36-8 victory over Paulsboro in the first round of the Group 1 tournament on Saturday.

Penns Grove was barred from participating in the tournament last season by the NJSIAA because three players were ejected from a game for fighting.

Under NJSIAA rules, any team that has three players ejected during the course of a season is ineligible for post-season play.

Carr was unavailable for comment on Tuesday morning.
