Penns Grove rolls over Glassboro

Penns Grove looked like an angry team on Saturday.

An opportunistic team, too.

The Red Devils, still stinging from being disqualified from the SJ Group 1 playoffs last season --  a tournament won by Glassboro -- dominated play en route to a 54-0 victory over Bulldogs in the season opener Saturday.

The Red Devils forced five turnovers, and turned two of them into immediate touchdowns on Richard Gray's 80-yard interception return for touchdown and Greg Thompson's fumble recovery in the end zone.

Junior quarterback Nick Elmer led the Penns Grove offense. Senior RB Corey Mills ran for a pair of scores.

Turnovers doomed Glassboro, which was playing its first game under new coach Mark Maccarone.

Penns Grove was 8-1 last season but was barred from the tournament because three players were ejected from a game against Salem. The Red Devils' only loss was 13-12 to Glassboro on opening day.

"I think about it every day and every night," Elmer said of the team's motivation to get in the playoffs this season after missing out last season. "We have to come back 20 times stronger."
