Camden Catholic's Coleman, Burlington Twp.'s Ferranto commit to D-1 programs

Camden Catholic rising senior Marcus Coleman has committed to attend Syracuse University for football.

Burlington Township rising senior John Ferranto has committed to North Carolina, also for football.

Coleman, a two-way lineman, will formally announce his decision at the press conference on Wednesday evening at Camden Catholic, according to Irish director of football operations John Barnett.

The 6-3, 300-pound Coleman is a leader of a Camden Catholic defense that is expected to be among the best in South Jersey this season under new coach Gil Brooks, who served as defensive coordinator last season under former head coach Rick Brown.

In addition to Coleman, the Irish also will feature rising junior linebacker Jared Alwan, perhaps South Jersey's top recruit in the class of 2013, as well as linebacker Andrew Rocobaldo, defensive backs Pete Galliano and Darien Bouzakis and several other top players.

The 6-6, 270-pound Ferranto is projected as an offensive tackle at North Carolina. He has played mostly defensive line in his first two varsity seasons at Burlington Township.

"I actually prefer the O-line," Ferranto said. "I like paving the way. It feels like you're part of something."

Ferranto received multiple offers after shining at a series of one-day camps earlier this summer. He said he seriously considered Temple and Connecticut.

"He's an all-around great kid," Burlington Township coach Tom Maderia said. "I told the coaches, 'You want guys like him on your team.' The more guys you have like him, the easier it is to coach."
