Yesterday marked the end of what will surely go down as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty in Pennsylvania history.
A Pittsburgh area woman was sentenced to two years of house arrest, 27 years probation, and must pay more than $200,000 restitution after pleading guilty to animal cruelty in connection with the mistreatment and deaths of hundreds - if not thousands - of cats housed at her rescue.
Linda Bruno, 47, of Tarentum, was sentenced by an Allegheny County Court Common Pleas judge yesterday after pleading guilty to 12 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and two other counts of tampering with evidence.Under the plea deal, prosecutors withdrew more than 500 other charges based on the nearly 497 dead, dying and diseased cats found on her property.
Bruno, also known as Lin Marie, operated Tiger Ranch, a 28-acre "sanctuary," which took in thousands of stray and feral cats from throughout the East coast until it was raided by the Pennsylvania SPCA in March 2008. Under terms of the sentencing, Bruno must undergo extensive psychiatric treatment and may not have contact with animals for 27 years.
Judge Jill Rangos sentenced Bruno to one to six months in jail but gave her credit for 37 days she served after violating conditions of her parole in October. Agents discovered Bruno was taking in cats again after her supporters were found burning bags of cat food on her property.
"I came into this case thinking ... you were most likely a woman who had good intentions but became overwhelmed. From that perspective until today, I have learned quite a lot," said Rangos, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "You have chosen not to cooperate and spew vitriol in others' direction without taking any personal responsibility for the disaster that Tiger Ranch became."

Bruno had billed her rescue as a "no-kill" shelter and "land of milk and tuna" for stray and feral cats. Word spread throughout the East Coast and as far west as Indiana that there was a safe haven in Pennsylvania for unwanted felines.
Rescue groups from Georgia to New York shipped in cats by the van load, hoping to save them from certain death in local shelters. Individuals - a number of whom called desperately seeking information on their cats when they learned of the raid - told me they saw Tiger Ranch as a last resort for feral cats they were unable to keep in their homes or apartments or for feral cat colonies being driven out of their homes by hostile property owners.
What happened to the cats became clear during Bruno's trial last summer.
Evidence produced then showed while more than 7,200 cats were taken in during 2006 and 2007. Only 23 cats were adopted during that time.
It also was revealed that Bruno had provided no veterinary care or spaying and neutering as she claimed she did. Allegheny County assistant district attorney Deborah Jugan said Bruno spent donation money on her own dental work, trips to the hair salon and Italian restaurants.
Bruno might still be operating if not for the actions of the Pennsylvania SPCA with the help of informants who worked as volunteers at Tiger Ranch. Under the leadership of Howard Nelson, the PSPCA took on the case in late 2007 when other humane organizations refused.
Here's what agents and veterinarians said they found during the March 13 raid:
1 house, 5 outbuildings in squalor; insufficient heat; malnutrition; dehydration; rampant disease due to a multitude of viruses and bacteria causing severe upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, septic arthritis, spontaneous abscesses and wounds, eye ulcerations, mouth ulcerations, meningitis, and septic shock.
Nelson, leading an army of some 100 volunteers and law enforcement officers on the property during the raid, called me from the scene. He described tripping over bodies, seeing dying cats struggle to stand, the overwhelmingly foul odor and the absurd sight of a few plastic plug-in air fresheners.
In all, agents found 497 cats on the property, 107 of them were deceased. Burial pits contained remains of many others. Of those brought out alive, 150 had to be euthanized. In the end, 240 healthy cats were either adopted or sent to rescue groups for adoption, a process that the PSPCA reported was completed at the end of 2009.
Throughout the duration of the case, defenders of Tiger Ranch dismissed the reports of widespread disease and suffering and accused the PSPCA of persecuting an innocent woman who was only trying to do her best for the cats.
One of Bruno's fiercest supporters, actor/activist Chris DeRose, condemned the PSPCA for its "false accusations" and urged prosecutors to drop the case and allow the cats of Tiger Ranch to "live out their lives peacefully."
Sue Cosby, chief executive officer of the PSPCA, said she was pleased with the sentence. "This is an important victory for the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Department, which investigates more than 6,000 cruelty/neglect cases annually," she said. "But more importantly it is some small measure of justice for the hundreds of cats that suffered unspeakable atrocities at Tiger Ranch and lived in deplorable conditions for much too long.”
Jugan yesterday praised the PSPCA for their "phenomenal" job on the case.
And she lamented the fact that had the money that once flowed into Tiger Ranch from those hoping to give unwanted cats a chance at life actually gone to the cats' veterinary care, "we wouldn't be here today."
It is hard to believe that Chris DeRose would defend this woman. Although a well known veterinarian in the humane community from Lancaster County also worked for the defense. Some people are so jealous of others that they would rather the animals suffer than someone receive credit for doing good. They have no shame! McGruff
Comment removed.- Just sickening
Put her in an unheated shack, with no clean water or food, with one small blanket and leave her there til her rotting flesh and bones are found. That's what she did to the cats she said she'd protect. Perhaps the pain of ulcerated eyes or meningitis will mean something to her while she's fending off the rats....but really, that treatment is too good for her. TexasChick
It's very bizarre that Chris DeRose, President & Founder from an organization called Last Chance for Animals, could have such a detailed, contractory view than that of the PSPCA. It should make you a little curious, at the least, to want to know more. What's the real truth, or is this all a matter of how different people have differing views? The contradictions are so extreme, who do we believe? philagator- PHILAGATOR: You raise some very valid points of which I agree. I truly doubt DeRose would come to someone's defense if he didn't know the truth. At the time of the raid, the head honcho at PSPCA was Howard Nelson who was firmly planted on his own pedestal after being bitten by the media bug following the Limestone Kennel raid....and others. Do I think the charges were trumped up to make the PSPCA look like the saviors at Tiger Ranch? Absolutely. The local newspeople & the neighbors of Tiger Ranch reported the gunfire coming from TR the night of the raid. My guess (& the only possible explanation for this) is that the ferals on the property & those felines allowed to roam free within the fenced-in compound were destroyed. This would eliminate the need to house the ferals for the duration of the trial & thus added to the body count on the property. Linda Bruno had many, many devoted volunteers who came to her defense following the raid. They continued to defend her until she pled guilty to the lesser counts. And why would she plead guilty? I doubt she had much choice considering she didn't have the millions of dollars that the PSPCA has to continue fighting the charges. It only takes one nasty person to start a witch hunt. Tiger Ranch was a no-kill sanctuary; therefore, one would expect to find old, sickly cats. The problem with Linda Bruno is that she didn't believe in euthanasia PERIOD. There is a difference when one euthanizes out of compassion versus euthanasia out of convenience. But what constitutes neglect & severe abuse? Many feline illnesses can be treated. Upper respiratory infections should not warrant euthanasia along with many other treatable illnesses. And we all know the SPCA's will kill instead of spending money to treat an illness. Let's hear from others on this topic.
Odd that any vet would testify on behalf of this woman??? McGruff, do you have a name for the vet in Lancaster County? Something is rotten in the state of Pennsylvania. Was it Tom Stevenson, McGruff? Must be - I just can't imagine too many vets would assist an animal abuser of this magnitude. Tom Stevenson. Bryan Langlois, of course. But who else, McGruff? Who would be so low? RE-Joyce
RAVENS FAN: Interesting points. But are you saying the gunfire was likely people from the PSPCA actually shooting some of the cats on the premises? philagator
Chris DeRose was contacted immediately after evidence was obtained from the informants. He reviewed a video with cats in the death room - a pile of 20 or so living and DEAD cats on a soiled towel on the cold concrete floor. One orange tabby was dead in the cheap food that was scattered on the floor, with bodily fluids draining out of her gaping mouth. He was also given pictures of the FOUR commercial sized freezers with hundreds of dead cats at Tiger Ranch. His niece was/is a friend and supporter of Lin Marie. Even after DeRose promised to end the suffering of hundreds of animals, he promptly retracted his offer of help after his niece begged him to leave Tiger Ranch alone. Not only did he not help to rescue the languishing cats (and other animals) he told Lin Marie that there was a "spy" and that the spy took video and pictures. Check out his publically made statements to corroborate this if you don't believe me, but I know this as absolute fact. He was NEVER at Tiger Ranch before the rescue. Also check out Mike Winicoff's statement - he quit his job at Last Chance for Animals after DeRose's refusal to aid the dying animals at Tiger Ranch. firsthandknowledge
Well...the cowardly lion ret....you know what...its not even worth stooping to the level of RE-Joyce and McGruff anymore. Something is rotten and smelly in the state of Pennsylvania, but it is the BS they are shoveling into Lancaster County. Here are the facts: I was contacted by the original defense team of Linda Bruno after someone connected to her saw me lecture at a Humane Conference. They asked if I would look over the evidence presented and I agreed to do that out of professional courtesy and render my opinion to them on it. I never agreed to work for them or testify on her behalf. Funny thing was I never was contacted again by them or her new defense team. Was not therebehind the scenes, Was not on some mysterious under the table payroll. Was not at the various courthouse hearings on it. So not sure how exactly I "worked" for them. I am assuming that RE-Joyce or McGruff would obviously have some hard proof of this statement they are making. McGruff, if you don't have the courage to state who you are, at least have the courage to state the vet you are trying to call out in Lancaster. Folks, you are all intelligent beings here who read this and I think that you are all capable of making your own decisions on things. You can choose to believe someone who has no problem stating who they are and their opinions openly, or you can choose to beleive people too cowardly to admit who they really are and continue to send slanderous statements my way without one shred of evidence. The choice is yours. I'm done playing the Wizard of Oz game with these people. By the way RE-Joyce...i'm still waiting on those answers. Bryan Langlois, DVM "As Always...my comments are mine alone and do not represent any thoughts or opinions of the Humane League of Lancaster County or any other professional organization." Ravensfan, it is obvious that you are either a supporter of the animal abuser or ignorant of the facts. I'll assume the later and clarify things for you. The cats at Tiger Ranch were not old - an average age of 2.4 years and only 6% of the cats were over 6 years of age. You are right that they were sickly - an absolute understatement. As was presented in court, theses babies died tortuous deaths after being exposed to many painful and crippling infectious diseases AT Tiger Ranch. Only around 30 ferals were within the rescued cat population. The Clarion medical team even placed a feeding tube and administered intravenous fluids to a feral cat and cured her of her pancreatitis that was secondary to a nearly fatal streptococcal disease she got at Tiger Ranch. You were not there and did not see the heroic measures that were taken to save the cats that Lin Marie tried to kill. How many emergency tracheostomies have you done on cats that couldn't breathe due to infectious diseases they were inhumanely exposed to? Hmmm that's what I thought. Please do not comment when you have not seen what I have seen. I directly assisted in the care of many of these cats. And by the way, what idiot would even think that people were shooting cats at Tiger Ranch?!!! There is a sportman's club adjacent to the property. The news even reported this. Only gravely ill, dying, suffering cats were HUMANELY euthanized by licenced veterinarians (and NO not by "heart sticks"). firsthandknowledge- firsthandknowledge: I will admit I never heard of Linda Bruno or Tiger Ranch until the raid occurred, but I've tried to follow the case since it happened. What I saw of Linda Bruno on tv did not impress me but my personal opinion of her was no reason to discount her. I do not believe the 14-1/2 yrs she operated this facility that it was always like this. This is based on the McKeesport vet who admitted turning animals over to TR but only after visiting TR & finding it a suitable facility, along with others who frequented TR And then there's DeRose statement of his surprise visit & findings. Since you are more in-the-know than I, can you tell me if there were any paid employees, was there a Board of Directors? If not, then 1 person could never handle that number of animals alone & I'd have to think being over-whelmed pushed her over the edge as is the case with hoarders. Was her mental state ever brought up in the trial? Were there any veterinarians involved or treating any of the animals? About the shootings at TR, I doubt the sportsmans club would be shooting at midnight & I wouldn't put anything past Howie Nelson, but that truth is buried with TR.
Actually, Lin Marie lied about being in operation for 14 years. She only gained ownership of the property in 1998. The mental evaluation/test she took was invalid due "to deception" as Judge Rangos stated. As was discussed in court yesterday, she ran Tiger Ranch for MONEY. She was not overwhelmed and was not trying to do good. The commonwealth showed financial evidence for over an hour. She illegally used the non-profit money for her personal expenses and her horse breeding business. The only thing she spent money on was to bury the dead cats (30 foot x 12 foot x 12 foot pits were discovered and shown in court)and for the shipping of the free cat food that they were too sick to eat (per court evidence). There were 4 or so "Paid volunteers" as she called them who came one day or so a week - mainly on Saturdays for 5 hours when she took in around 200 cats. Oh yeah, she paid a humane agent for some reason...Her own records indicated that she took in over 6,400 cats just in 2007. The "vet" you mention is no longer a vet, and, as it was stated in court yesterday, Lin Marie/Tiger Ranch did not have a veterinarian EVER to take care of the cats or other animals. They were untreated and left to slowly die. She finally admitted to this when talking to the judge after the DA's office called and spoke with every veterinarian that she claimed to use. Did you completely ignore what I said about DeRose? Did you see the video that DeRose viewed and the horrendous conditions he ignored? (http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/video/15645331/index.html). The "Board of Directors" was Lin Marie, her mother (Irene Bruno), and a family friend (Wendy Marchese). The shooting was heard during the daylight hours on March 14th and WAS from the sportsman's club. No guns were fired at Tiger Ranch - people were standing right by the fence on the neighbor's property and I can have 50 witnesses attest to that. firsthandknowledge- NO, I did not 'completely ignore' what you said about DeRose. And no, I did not watch the video yet either, but I intend to. I cannot speak for DeRose & whether he saw the video or not. You obviously think he did & chose to ignore what he saw. It's possible he just didn't believe what he saw was from TR. I can understand because there have been so many pro & con statements regarding TR making it impossible to know what or who to believe. She obviously had many buffaloed. You can see from a few of these comments how witch hunts get started & it doesn't take much for the hunters to gather followers. Reputations get ruined if people stop asking questions before jumping on the bandwagons of those slinging accusations. I'm glad you were able to shed some light on this subject to those of us who were not at the hearing or closely involved in this case.
Judge Jill A. Rangos, who repeatedly admonished the defendant and expressed her disappointment in the multitude of lies she told, did not order the woman to jail. But she didn't discount the possibility either. Instead, the judge ordered Ms. Marie, 47, to serve two years of house arrest, followed by 27 years of probation. But Judge Rangos also told the defendant she would not hesitate to put Ms. Marie in jail if she violates even the slightest of conditions of her release.
