UPDATE: More than one million pit bulls were killed in the United States last year. That's more than all the dogs registered by the American Kennel Club. See more on Terrierman blog.

Sometimes the plight of homeless animals seems overwhelming. Tens of thousands of animals enter shelters around the state each year. Many are saved. More are not.

What can any single person do? Get a hanky and click on Stanley's story below. His is not so much a Christmas miracle as evidence of what can happen when people from all over, who've never met each other, come together to save a life.

Here's to new life in the new year.

(Thanks Libby for tipping Philly Dawg to the video)

Wonderful, wonderful video... I hope you will continue to post updates to Stanley's story that all began with one person - who could not do it all, but did what they could to make this happen. Thank you to everyone in animal rescue!

I've seen this five times now and bawl every time. It's so beautifully done and moving. I have to admit, I have not always been a fan of pulling dogs from other states when we have so many homeless ones in dire straits right here. But, I feel like I walked a mile in that rescuer's shoes and now understand more than ever how impossible it is to turn away. It breaks my heart that so many adoptable dogs die because of human ignorance and neglect. More importantly, we need mandatory spay & neuter laws to combat animal overpopulation. And yes, many thanks to Stanley's rescuer and all those behind the scenes working tirelessly, endlessly and anonymously every day for homeless animals everywhere.
