Sanctuary: Help feed the turkeys this Thanksgiving

Instead of cooking a turkey this Thanksgiving, why not adopt one?

Reggie and Jake, the animated stars of the new movie “Free Birds," voiced by Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson, have teamed up with Farm Sanctuary, the largest farm animal rescue and protection organization in the United States, to serve as “spokesturkeys” for the group’s annual Adopt a Turkey Project.

The program gives people the opportunity to sponsor one of the rescued birds who reside at the group’s shelters in New York and California, has provided care for more than 1,000 rescued turkeys - along with thousands of other farm animals including goats, sheep, cows and chickens - over the last 25 years.

For a donation of $30, adopters receive an adoption certificate with color photo and details about their new adopted turkey friend.

Turkeys are intelligent and social animals, who form lifelong bonds and possess unique abilities to communicate with one another, the sanctuary says.

Just as “Free Birds” brings to life the personalities of each of its animal characters, caretakers at Farm Sanctuary know that real-life turkeys possess distinct personalities and exhibit a joy for life.

Among the adoptable turkeys is Turpentine, pictured above. He was rescued from a farmer who could not bring himself to slaughter her. She is now a resident of the sanctuary's Watkins Glen, NY facility where she enjoys human attention and dines on kiwis and melons.
