Gov. Rendell -  Eagles post-game commentator and champion of animal welfare in Pennsylvania - offered his reaction today to the Michael Vick deal. Rendell, who fought for passage of the new state dog law last year to improve conditions in commercial breeding kennels or puppy mills,  said Vick has paid his dues and he offered to help him meet his goal to be an advocate for dogs.

Here's what Rendell said today:

"I believe that I don't have to take a back seat to anyone in my commitment to helping protect all animals, and specifically our dogs and puppies. I am enormously proud of the progress we have made through the enactment of our new dog law and stepped-up enforcement efforts.

“I also believe strongly in the tenets of rehabilitation and redemption. I believe Michael Vick has paid a strong and just penalty for his horrific acts, but he has endured that penalty with dignity and grace. He seems to be genuinely remorseful for what he has done.

“Michael Vick’s work with the Humane Society has been a positive step and I believe he will continue to be an advocate for protecting our canine friends. His experience will add extra weight to that message, and I look forward to working with him toward achieving that goal."

Ya know what I find the most odd...It is EXTREMELY rare when you get the chance to hear someone say "He has paid for his 'horrific' acts". How many other times have we declared someone's actions as 'horrific' and just let it all go?

MFPhils...you missed the whole message. We all know what Vick did was horrific, even Vick admits that. What Rendell was "trying" to say was that he paid for what he did and now is permitted BY LAW to get on with his life. That's the way it works in this country. If you guys are so set on living in a society where a person makes a mistake and is NEVER allowed to rehabilitate, then you should be living in Iran. Like it or not, he's wearing wings on his helmet now and if it bothers you that much...I'll be more than happy to take your Eagles tickets off your hands. Assuming you do actually go support them, because if not, we don't need your comments.

Seems like Vick is also an excellent con artist. My guess is he will keep up his act until all restrictions are lifted....then revert to type.

Yes, by LAW he is free. Doesn't mean the Eagles were right to sign him. By law, Charles Manson's flunky got released today and is FREE as well. Doesn't mean anyone should hire her back wherever she wants to go. If he wants to really repent, let him take a $12/hr job. Hell, he could even do it for the humane society full time. He'll contribute little to the Eagles football-wise, so let him use his talents elsewhere. In fact, let corrupt Rendell join him.

Michael Vick paid too much for his crime. The Manson follower killed human beings. You can't be comparing the two Phillyrussian7. Where is your concerns for all the game who are killed all in the name of Sport.

Get your facts straight. The Manson follower who was released was not even in jail for the Manson murders. She was in jail for attempting to assassinate Gerald Ford. And she is also dying of brain cancer. If Vick wants to repent get a 9-5 job like the rest of us. Instead...he gets to play a game and get paid more money than most of us will ever see. He is a degenerate.

It would be interesting to know how many supporters of the Vick signing have hired, or advocated the hiring of, ex-cons in their own companies. And what is the Eagles' organizational policy about hiring ex-cons in their back office operations?
