Authorities have charged the owner of a young emaciated pitbull found Delaware County on Halloween.
Lamont Alexander, 28, of Morton, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty for wantonly failing to provide care (otherwise known as starving an animal) and animal abandonment.
He turned himself in, SPCA officials said, because people in Morton had identified him as the owner.
According to the defendant’s statement he said, “I thought the best thing to do would be to let him go, so I had someone drive me and let the dog go in Lower Chichester.”
For his inhumane action Alexander may face little more than a $100 fine. Each citation of animal cruelty carries a maximum of 90 days of jail time and a fine ranging from $50-$750.
Just a few weeks ago, the little survivor, now named Curious George, was roaming the streets of Lower Chichester weighing just 35 pounds (see picture above). SPCA officials declared his condition the worst case of animal abuse the county had seen.
George is now a healthy 60 pounds, SPCA officials say, and they are taking adoption applications for him.
Thanks to the overwhelming community support, the Curious George Fund has been established in his name to care for all of the other animals that arrive at the Delaware County SPCA in the same deplorable conditions as Curious George, the SPCA said.
Interesting bunch of comments from a few dog-loving, people-hating folks. You know, you don't have to choose between people and animals. And you can condemn an animal abuser without guessing at some facet of his/her identity and condemning all others who share that factor. Are we supposed to loathe all white men, or all football coaches, or all founders of children's services, or all people who take foster children and adopt, or everyone in the world named "Sandusky"?

- @ DailyNewsSux - The dog was let loose by the owner on October 31st and brought to the Delco SPCA by a kindhearted person the very same day. My guess, based on the owner's statement in the article, is that this dog was neglected in a basement or backyard for weeks. Completely agree with you that it sucks, but it wasn't the case that the dog was wandering around and nobody bothered to take him in.— SJUSteve
