Bain Capital.

"Romneycare."

"Crate Gate?"

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is fighting back against critics who call him a "job killer" and those who condemn him imposing "socialized medicine" on the people of Massachusetts during his time as governor.

But he's got another group of critics on the campaign trail he just can't seem to shake: animal lovers.

Like elephants, they have long memories. They can't shake the crate incident.

Leading the charge - well, after New York Times columnist Gail Collins - is the group Dogs Against Romney which is taking its campaign to the World Series of canine events, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, today.

They have invited "everyone who believes dogs aren't luggage" to Madison Square Garden to protest Romney's treatment of his dog Seamus who was strapped to a car top for 12 hours on a family vacation trip 30 years ago.

The group - which has a line of creative merchandise like bumper stickers "I Ride Inside" and "Crate Gate" - says it wants to call attention to Mitt Romney's treatment of his Irish Setter who was forced to ride in a crate on the roof top during the long ride from Boston to a Canadian lake.

(Although nobody's ever said where Seamus rode on the way home so maybe he spent 24 hours atop the car.)

Animal lover Gail Collins has mentioned the Romney dog incident no fewer than more than three times in her column read by millions on the op-ed pages of the Times.

Now others are making statements about Crate Gate in public places.

A motorist in Littleton, Co.was pulled over by police last week after someone called 911 to report a dog in a crate on a car roof.

The driver it seems was making a statement. The animal on the roof was a stuffed dog toy. Dogs Against Romney claimed responsibility for the act, confirming the man as a member of its "Super Pack."

In a blog post the group said the fact the man was pulled over  “clearly illustrates how blatantly awful, incredibly dangerous, outrageously insensitive — and even illegal — Mitt Romney’s decision to transport his own dog on the roof of his car was.”
