Bo-Bama poised to rock Nation's Capital

Shall we call him Bo-Bama?

The Portuguese Water Dog formerly known as Charlie will now and forever be known as Bo. That's the name the Obama girls have chosen for their new puppy who was expected to arrive at the White House as early as today.

So much for the big unveiling of the presidential puppy at a ceremony Tuesday almost all the details about the dog - except where he will sleep and who gets pooper scooper duty- have already spread like wildfire through cyberspace. In what was among the most tightly held secrets and most fought after news stories in Washington, The Washington Post secured the "exclusive" on the choice of the First Dog, but news was already leaking from all corners. The six-month-old male who came from a Texas breeder favored by the Kennedy family is gift from Sen. Kennedy. "We couldn't be happier to see the joy that Bo is bringing to Malia and Sasha," Kennedy said in a statement. "We love our Portuguese water dogs and know that the girls , and their parents , will love theirs, too."

The Post reports the name "Bo" is a reference to the late rocker Bo Diddley and pays homage to Malia and Sasha's grandfather. First Lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed "Diddley." One interesting note on the question of adoption. Since the Obamas did not end up with a true rescue dog from a shelter as they had said they would have liked to, the Post reports instead they are planning to make a donation to the D.C Humane Society.
