Two area animals are vying for the title of nation's top hero pet.

The "Pets of Valor Award" sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States celebrates the bonds between people and their rescued or adopted pets by shining the spotlight on a few of the acts of bravery and devotion that occur every day.

Among the five finalists is a cat from Lancaster County and a dog from South Jersey.

Taz, a six-year-old tabby cat, woke her owners just in the nick of time before a fire consumed their home. Kathy Rinehart and her fiancee were able to rescue six of their eight other pets before being forced to flee. A firefighter said if Taz hadn't woken them when he did they would not have survived. The Humane League of Lancaster County cared for the family's pets after they were displaced.

More on her story here.

Lilly, a year-old pit bull mix from Ocean County led a rescuer to her owner when she collapsed during a walk.

Lilly, who was rescued from Joe Joe's Place, took a rescuer to Dona Timoney when she fell into deep bog grasses. Timoney was unconscious and had suffered a brain aneurysm. Timoney would die of the condition 12 days later but her family credits Lilly with ensuring she was found and giving them a precious few last days with her.

In appreciation of the shelters and rescues that cared for these hero pets, BOGO Bowl will donate 500 pounds of dog food to the shelter or rescue that cared for the winning animal.

The winner will be announced online June 2 and will receive an original sterling silver pet tag with a bezel set stone by Bella Tocca Tags and a personalized crystal dog figurine by Custom Glass Etching of Los Angeles
