Procter & Gamble is expanding a dog and cat food recall to include veterinary and some specialized dry pet food as a precautionary measure because there is the possibility of salmonella contamination.
Though it should be emphasized that no salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.
The following dry pet food products are included in the recall:
Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas
Eukanuba Naturally Wild
Eukanuba Pure
Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin
For a full list consult the Iams website.
The affected products are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers throughout the United States and Canada. No canned food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement. A full listing of UPC codes can be found at the Iams site.
These products are made in a single, specialized facility. In consulation with the Food and Drug Administration, P&G decided to recall all foods made at that facility.
The company advises consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them. People handling dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.
Pets with salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
For further information or a product refund call P&G toll-free at 877-340-8823. Consumers may also check the Iams website for more.
This is exactly why, when Proctor and Gamble bought Nutura Products, I immediately switched brands. I now feed my dogs Fromm products and I am very satisfied. Better price and real quality assurance from a much smaller company. Redbud
Yep, they will ruin Evo. Fromm is very good food. Also like the Solid Gold and Orijen. Philly lawyer
Taste of The Wild is the best food out there. (not the eukanuba flavor, the COMPANY called taste of the wild) lowthrowmcblow
Taste is high quality and a bargain for a a good grain free food, but it is manufactured by Diamond, and not ethoxyquin free. You can call the Fromm company and actually talk to a Fromm. Since the big recalls of '07 it seems smaller and more control is better. Philly lawyer
This is exactly why I feed my pets Organix! It's been tested over and over. My beagle & cats LOVE IT and it no more expensive then other premium brands. I'm so tired of recalls! Lewiewho
I have been feeding my greyhounds (all 3 of them) Eubanuka Naturally Wild for about 6 months now. Before that I was feeding them Taste of the Wild but I was told that wasn't a good food to use so I switched to the Eubanuka thinking it was of better quality. I am getting sick & tired of these pet food recalls, when I adopted our first greyhound she was being fed Diamond so I kept her on it until she got very sick from that food - that is when I went to more natural foods thinking they wer of better quality - I guess not. PLEASE advise as to what pet food is safe anymore - I am scared to death to buy any dog food since we almost lost our first greyhound to the bad food Diamond was making. couchracers
If you want an "all-natural" dog food . . . feed raw! AnimalVolunteer

My question is how can salmonnella bacteria survive on the OUTSIDE of the bag? This is what I was told when I called P & G. My Norwegian Elkhound passed away sometime after 4 AM on Wednesday morning. The cause was unknown and since she was 14 her vet put it down to old age, but she was up and fine that morning and ate her food as usual. When my boyfriend got home she would not eat, her teeth were clenched, and she could not stand. This was just a few hours before the recall was announced. She had also had 2 accidents in the house and had been lethargic on Sunday and Monday, not wanting to go for her nightly walks. One P & G rep told me her symptoms sounded very much like salmonnella. It's too late to know for cerain if she developed salmonnella bacteria or not but you can bet I will not be feeding ANY P & G product again. robertainlexington

How about an actual URL "at the Iams website". You're pointing to the top of the site. If there's anything about a recall there it's pretty well hidden. MaggieL
Here's the actual URL. Pretty sad Ms. Worden couldn't be bothered to search it. http://www.iams.com/iams/en_US/data_root/html/recall_message.html When "jornolists" wonder why folks won't pay for content, here's an example. MaggieL
Iams, Eukanuba & Proctor & Gamble torture animals in laboratories. You support that when you buy these products. If you truly love animals, you wouldn't give money to these companies. kliffee
