Where are they now? The many pieces of the Halladay-Lee deal
Trades aren't measured after only a few months, but since we can't jump in a DeLorean and see how it all pans out, here's a look at how the pieces in the Roy Halladay trade have performed in the short time since the offseason swap:
Pitcher Kyle Drabek, the centerpiece of the package Toronto received for Halladay, threw a no-hitter on Sunday for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Blue Jays' Double-A affiliate. The 22-year-old former Phillies first-round pick is now 8-8 with a 3.20 ERA for the Fisher Cats, with 80 K, 40 BB, and a 1.22 WHIP in 107 innings.
Catcher Travis d'Arnaud, 21, also acquired by the Blue Jays from the Phillies, is hitting .288 with 6 HR and 30 RBI for the Dunnedin (Florida) Blue Jays in High-A.
Outfielder Michael Taylor, 24, shipped from Philadelphia to Toronto and then to Oakland, is hitting .247 with 3 HR and 41 RBI for the Sacramento River Cats, the Athletics' Triple-A affiliate.
That's what the Phillies gave up to get Halladay. Here's what they got for Cliff Lee:
Pitcher Phillipe Aumont, 21, started the year in Double-A but was demoted to High-A after going 1-6 with a 7.43 ERA in 49.2 innings for Reading. He is 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 14.2 innings for Clearwater.
Outfielder Tyson Gillies, 21, is hitting .238 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in 26 games for Reading. He missed time with a hamstring injury earlier this spring.
Pitcher J.C. Ramirez, 21, was promoted to Reading after going 4-3 with a 4.06 ERA, 17 BB, and 55 K in 64.1 innings in Clearwater. In his three starts since the promotion, Ramirez is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA, 10 K, and 6 BB in 18.1 innings.
Halladay is 9-7 with a 2.42 ERA in his first year on the Phillies. He has 112 K, 17 BB, and a 1.11 WHIP in a league-leading 130 innings.
Lee is 8-3 in 103.1 innings and leads the American league with a 2.34 ERA and a 0.945 WHIP. He is also on pace to shatter the record for K/BB ratio with 89 K and only 6 BB.
Both Halladay and Lee were tapped to represent their leagues in the All-Star Game in Anahiem.
They're not the only All-Stars in the bunch, though, as Drabek will represent the Fisher Cats in the Eastern League All-Star game.
Torture, torture, pure torture. Thanks so much! dasher
When Drabek compiles the body of work that Halladay has in his career, call me. Otherwise, don't bother us with "What Ifs" like this column. The Phillies present sad state of affairs has nothng to do with whether or not we still had Drabek, d'Arnaud or Taylor. Prospects are just that; some pan out, some don't. The Phils have been decimated with injuries, unlike the past two years. When you don't have your regular lineup, it's hard to be consistent. I'll give you the fact that Lee would have made a difference with Happ on the DL for a long time but the lack of a consistent is the difference. 1republican
still say could have waited a little time longer and gotten much more for lee.what's up with that, maybe a promise to give him back at mid-season if things did not work out in seattle and the phillees need him? LOUESPO
The Cliff Lee move the worst move of all time. CrashTestCorzine
Im just glad Ruben did his "due dilligence" on that Lee trade. Can someone tell me why every other team with a major player to trade can get teams lining up to give them their top prospects but when the phillies trade someone (schilling, rolen, lee) we always get low-end players?? Sewellmatt
It's not the what we gave up for Halladay that we need to be comparing. It's the bums we got for Lee. There are not stats presented that even make me think any of the 3 of them will ever play in the majors. Another HORRIBLE move by RAJ. rock12

It's good to see someone checking up on our old prospects to see how they are doing. I agree with 1republican though...to go over the " what ifs " is useless at this point esp. when everyone including the writer of this article jumped at the idea of giving if prospects for Halladay. The move to get a pitcher like Halladay was a good one so no need to look back and say " what if ". Lack of hitting, injuries, and even contracts ( Moyer/Ibanez ) have hurt the Phils starting way back in Dec in keeping Lee or finding/trading for the type of players they need now. tony b
Lee's record would be 10-1 if he had been given any support in first 2 games vs Rays. Lee beat Yanks last 3 times he faced them; Halladay has been blown out most recently by yanks, redsox and twins. Lee beat Reds 1-0 in complete game; Halladay followed that by losing to Reds 4-3 after early 3-0 lead. In past 2 1/2 yrs, Lee went 22-3 in 2008, and had 2009 post-season among best in recent history, while Halladay's been merely "good". Notwithstanding Toronto GM hype, Lee has been far superior pitcher since 2008. So why again did Phils trade 3 high prospects for Halladay, each of whom was rated dramatically higher than any of the 3 minor prospects the phils recievd for Lee? indeed the Phils paid more for blanton in 2008 than they received for Lee. warbiscuit
hallady's career numbers, like his cy young 7 yrs ago, are as relevant today as are grover alexander's numbers. right now-- and consistently since 2008 -- Lee is the much better pitcher and winner. It's irrelevant in 2010 as to whose career numbers are good enough for HOF: since 2008 Lee has been lights out; Halladay not so much...and to pay with 3 real prospects for so-called upgrade that was actually downgrade only adds inslt to injury.. warbiscuit
Ok...so we basically traded Drabek and Lee (this season) for Halladay for 4-5 seasons. I'd love to have Lee, but he alone wouldn't cure what really ails this team....which is injuries and lack of leadership. The really hard pill to swallow will be when Lee gets traded to the Mutts....but by that time the Phillie's season could be over. I hope I'm wrong and guys like Rollins, Ibanez and Howard step up BIG. Go Phils. dri_as_a_bone
its also irrelevant whether aumont, gilles, or ramirez actually miraculously somehow become "real prospects" in the future; since right now they are largely considered long shots and worthless, and no other team in baseball would give anything of value in exchange for them , effectivelly their current value is close to zero. if a stock trades for 7 cents that is its current value; if miraculously it increases and becomes worth more, its current value is still largely worthless since no one would pay more than 7 cents. and anyone can buy that chance for 7 cents....one can buy a lottery ticket for $1 but the lottery ticket is still currenty only worth $1.... warbiscuit
Amaro gave up a SURE THING in Cliff Lee for a few suspects prospects that are giving no reason to think they will amount to anything. Meanwhile, the Phillies' major-league window of opportunity is closing. (HTML deleted) jman
driasabone-- phils could have paid same $20 mil/yr to Lee (or slightly more) and kept Lee -- and still have Drabek and the other 2 blue chip prospects --that's the travesty....and Lee's been much better pitcher and winner than Halladay for past 2.5 yrs notwithstanding Halladay's cy young 7 yrs ago..... warbiscuit
Lee and Halladay are a wash. Both are great pitchers. In essence we gave up Drabek for bums. As previous posts have stated, we would be better off with Lee and Drabek than Halladay and bums. By the way, Halladay is a 1.5yrs older and has thrown 2100 innings vs 1300 for cliff Lee. Thats about 4 full seasons worth of innings (yikes). I sure hope Halladay doesn't break down in a year or so (this town will go nuts). Four4Four
